DANIEL C. BABCOCK, M. D., deceased, who for many years was aprominent physician of RockCounty, was born in Batavia, N.Y.,April 2, 1818, and died at San Jose, Cal., on the 19th day ofJanuary, 1875. He was a son of Elder Daniel and Lois (POTTER)BABCOCK. His father, who was born in 1787, was a minister ofthe Seventh Day Baptist Church, and died Oct. 26, 1868, at theripe old age of eighty-two years, surviving his wife who died inAugust, 1846.
After attaining to years of maturity, our subject was married onthe 1st day of June, 1843, to Miss Amorilla COLLINS, a daughterof Dr. John B. and Catherine (BURDICK) COLLINS. Her father wasa celebrated physician in Allegany County, N.Y., and his deathoccurred Aug. 27, 1851, his wife departing this life in NewYork, April 14, 1860. Their family numbered six children ofwhom Mrs. Babcock is the eldest; John, the second in orderofbirth, is living in Georgia; Amos and Lorenzo, are residents ofAlfred, N.Y.;Teresa married Dr. William Henry OVERT, ofClintonville, Waupaca Co., Wis., andWilliam, who resides inMissouri.
Dr. BABCOCK received his literary education at Alfred CentreN.Y., and then entered the Medical College of Castleton, Vt.,from which he later graduated. He then attended a course oflectures in New York City for about a year, graduating from theinstitution there in the class of 1842, and the following year, was above stated, as united in marriage. Shortly afterward theyoung couple came to Johnstown, Rock County, settling on a farmnear that place, where Dr. Babcock engaged in practice, and alsodevoted his attentionto agricultural pursuits in connectionwith his father. After a few years had passed, he went toMilton, where he opened an office and established one of thelargest and best practices in this part of the country.Whatever the weather, whether in winter's cold or summer's heat,or in the storms which visit us at all seasons, he responded tothe call from the sick and suffering ones, and would rideformiles to visit his patients, often going without food for anentire day. Inconsequence of his exposure and fasting, consumption slowly fastened upon his frame, but for seven yearshe lingered on, during which time he could not ride out, but forsome time would make calls in the town as he considered theexercise beneficial. At length, with the hope of a partial ifnot total recovery, he sought the warm climate of California, where he passed away Jan. 19, 1875.
Dr. BABCOCK was a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, andtook a deep interest inits advancement, and in the promotion ofany enterprise for the public welfare. He was an ardentsupporter of the Republican party, earnestly advocating itsprinciples, and while residing in Johnstown was twice elected tothe Legislature, serving in the General Assemblies of 1847 and1848. His public duties were discharged with promptness andability, and to the entire satisfaction of his constituents, while even his political opponents could find no fault in hispolicy. Hewas a man of much more than ordinary ability, andhis kindly manner in the sickroom won all hearts. His deathwas mourned not only by his immediate family, but the entirecommunity sorrowed as for a kind friend and brother, and thecountylost one of its prominent and honored citizens.
