Notes:
He was at Hartford with his father and shortly after his father's death, he
moved to Saybrook.
!History of Norwich, Connecticut: From its Possession by the Indians, to the
Year 1866, Frances Manwaring Caulkins, 1976, page 167: Thomas Bliss, Senior
and Junior, had house-lots and divisions of land in Hartford, as early as 1640.
The senior died in Hartford, leaving nine children, and his widow, Margaret,
apparently a woman of resolute, independent character, removed with the younger
part of the family to Springfield. Thomas Bliss, Junior, is afterwards found
at Saybrook, where his marriage and the births of six children are recorded.
The list is repeated with some variation of date and the addition of two more
children, at Norwich. The wife's family name is not given in either place.
"Thomas and Elizabeth Bliss were married the latter end of October, 1644."
The allotments of Thomas Bliss in Saybrook were eastward of the river in
what is now Lyme. His house-lot of thirty acres lay between John Ompsted
(Olmstead) on the north, and John Lay south. He sold it, July 23, 1662, to
John Comstock. His home-ot in Norwich was also near to that of John Olmstead,
extending originally, at the north-west, to the pent highway. That part where
the house stands, has never been alienated. Seven generations have dwelt on
the same spot, and the house is supposed not to have been entirely rebuilt
since it wa erected by the first proprietor.
Thomas Bliss died April 15, 1688. His will, executed two days before his
death, was proved at New London, before Edward Palmes, June 13, and allowed by
Sir Edmun Adross at Boston; this being the period when that delegated despot
arrogated to himself supreme authority over the courts of New England. The
will recognizes wife Elizabeth, son Samuel, and six daughters. His oldest son,
Thomas, had died without issue, Jan. 29, 1681. Elizabeth the relict, died Feb.
28, 1699-1700.
Samuel Bliss married, Dec. 8, 1681, Anna, daughter of John Elderkin. Five
of his daughters married as follows: Elizabeth married Edward Smith of New
London, June 7, 1663. Sarah married 1st, Thomas Sluman, Dec., 1668; 2d,
Solomon Tracy. Deliverance (recorded also Deliver and Dolinda) married Josiah
Rockwell, 1688. Rebecca, the youngest daughter, born in 1663, had not been
traced.
In the inventory of Thomas Bliss, his estate is estimated at 182.17.7
pounds. He had land, besides his home-lot, over the river, - on the Little
Plain, - at the Great Plain, - at the Falls, - in Yantie meadow, - in meadow at
Beaver Brook, - in pasture east of the town, - and on Westward hill.
This illustrated the prudential course of the early rulers of the
plantation in regard to the common lands. They were divided in small
quantities at short intervals, corresponding to the growth and necessities of
the town and the ability of the owners to clear them up and place them under
cultivation.

Elderkin, John (1616-1687) of New London, CT. English home: He came on the
"Recovery of London" from Weymouth, Dorset, in 1634 (NGSQ 71:172) but Snow-
Estes says he came from Fenns, Lincolnshire. Savage (2:107) says he was in
Lynn MA. (1637) and New London, CT. (1651)
History of New London County by Hurd: He was at Dedham, Massachusetts
in 1641. He was granted land in New London, Connecticut about 1650.
He was a house carpenter and millwright. He worked with Thomas Wells on mills
and meeting houses. The earliest vote concerning a mill in New London was 11
December 1660 which was the renewal of a contract made at Saybrook 26 February
1655 between John Elderkin and the Town of Moheagan to erect a corn mill at
No-Man's Acre. The mill was soon moved to below the falls. The mill and
miller's house stood there for many years.
History of Norwich, Connecticut, Frances Manwaring Caulkins, 1976, page 119:
In 1673 the town contracted with John Elderkin to build forthwith a new meeting
house. The site fixed for it was the summit of the hill, towering over the
Green, and looking east and west toward the two ends of the town-plot. The
country was at this period in a disturbed condition. The atmosphere was dark
with the shadows of approaching evil. On the western border of New England the
Dutch had assumed a threatening attitude, and several of the larger Indian
tribes appeared surly and vindictive.

!He died from injuries when a farm wagon turned over. All came to New England
in 1630 on the 'Mary and John'.
!The History of Ancient Windsor, by Henry J. Stiles, & other sources; Mary &
John, volume 2, page 68: John Drake ( -1659) Granted lot in 1640, 363 ft.
wide, on Conn. River, s. of John St. Nicholas & n. of John Bissell, acrossed
the road from "Rocky Hill", on the west. In 1652, he complained in Court that
John Bennett had enticed and drawn away the affections of Drake's dau. Bennett
was often in trouble and Drake may not have wanted him to associate with a
daughter. This was either Elizabeth (age 21) or Mary (age 20), who married
respectively, William Gaylord Jr., or John John Gaylord, both from "Mary &
John" families, the following year. John Drake died from injuries received in
front of John Griffin's house, when he was driving a cart loaded with corn,
drawn by two oxen and his mare. Griffin was living either on the lot of
Francis Stiles or Henry Stiles. Something frightened the oxen and they began
running away. John tried to stop them by grabbing the mare. He was thrown
down on his face and was run over by one of the cart wheels. A leg was broken
and he was so bruised they thought he was dead. He was carried to his
daughter's house and died soon after. This daughter was probably, Elizabeth
(age 38), widow of William Gaylord Jr., who lived between the lots of Francis &
Henry Stiles. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and children, Elizabeth
(38) widow in Windsor, Mary (37), wife of John Gaylord of Windsor, Job (36),
husband of Mary Wolcott, in Windsor, John Jr.(34), husband of Hannah Moore in
Windsor & Jacob (33), husband of Mary Bissell in Windsor.
