    1. Started work as poler on barges and deckhand. Adam moved to Beaver Co., PA, with his father and captained some of the riverboats. He had 11 children (but no George). Later owned a number of steamboats. Hauled cargo for military, but not in military. Mentioned brotherIsaac also in boat trade. Elsewhere mentioned that 3 brothers and he bought towboat. BET. 1861 - 1865 Riverboat pilot during Civil War. Named one boat after"the great Wyandotte chiefBigfoot". Sailed Ohio, Allegheny, Wabash, Mississippi, & Missouri.Wrote book including personal Poe family account, May 2, 1887. Resided in Georgetown, PA most of life. Was active in keelboat and steamship business. Lived to be 80 per Tom T. Jones, who mentions 4 brothers. PerTom T. Jones, married Lucy Smith; had "large family".

    2. Captain Adam Poe was a farmer and a riverboat pilot. He was a Captain and an owner. Some of his boats were the Federal Arch, the America, the Big Foot, the Neptune and the America II.
    Buried in Georgetown, PA cemetery. Date of death also listed as 1895.
    Religion Methodist Episcopal.

    3. Adam Poe, Sr. made a written biographical account in 1887 that appears to support accounts that his grandfather Adam, brother of Andrew, spent most of his later life near Massilon, OH. He reported being taken there by his grandfather when he was about 5 years old (Abt 1821) and that his father, Thomas, built a house there the following year. This was said to be in Wayne Co., where the town of Congress stands. Due to flu, Adam returned to New Lisbon (present Lisbon, OH) with his mother; the following winter, his father moved their family home to Georgetown, PA. Nevertheless, the older Adam and others in the family probably remained in that area (Abt 10 mi NW of Wooster and 35 mi W of Masillon).

    Research done by Don Milligen, Kent, Washington, provided the names of Elizbeth's husband and children. She was described from his records as a daughter of Jacob and Dorthea Hephner.

    Hugh Miller spelled "Hefner" this way - "Hephner."
    The sons of Thomas Poe, Sr., of Georgetown, Beaver Co., PA, are said to own vessels plying the Ohio River and are quite wealthy.

    She was one of 13 children. One was her twin sister Maria Barbara Hephner. One brother was
    probably Michael. Her parents and siblings moved to Allegheny Co in 1786. She was baptised by a traveling Rev. Johann Wilhelm Weber of the German Reformed Congregations on Sep 24, 1786.

    Year of birth also listed as 1785.

    According to the German Church records of Westmorland Cty. Penn., 1772-1791, Vol 1 & 2, Elizabetha Hapfener was born on April 8, 1786 and baptised on September 24, 1786 by Rev. Johann Wilhelm Weber of the German Reformed Congregations. He traveled through the surrounding counties of Pa. and thus it is assumed he may have baptised her in Allegheny County since the family is known to have moved there in 1786. Her parents were listed as Jacob Hapfener and Maria Dorthea. A Michael Schumacher witnessed the baptism. It is presumed that this is Dorthea's brother and she is the twin sister of Maria Barbara Hephner.

    May have been born at sea in 1745 and birth not recorded until arrival in America. Marion Yost of the 16th Reformed Church, Massillon, OH wrote this to A. McIntosh.

Marshall to defend the frontier and served under Col. Baird & D. Williamson. Served in War of 1812 as a Capt. Pension applied 31 Aug 1832.

    POE, MATTHEWS, KOFFEL I am a direct descendant of Adam POE b. 1745 or
    1747 in Frederick Co, MD and died on either Sept. 23, 1838 or 1840 in Stark Co.,
    OH. He married Betsey MATTHEWS, b. in Feb. 1756 in Down, North Ireland
    (Ulster). She came to America in 1768 and died in Stark Co., Ohio. Adam and Betsey were the parents of Sarah Poe, b. July 15, 1791 in Washington Co., PA and died in Congress, Congress Twp, Wayne Co., Ohio. Sarah married Adam Koffel, b. April 15, 1788 in Rockhill Twp, Bucks Co, PA and died in Congress, Congress Twp., Wayne Co. Ohio on March 14, 1868. Sarah and Adam KOFFEL were the parents of Catherine Koffel, b. Oct. 26, 1813 in Columbiana Co., Ohio and married Lewis T. Kelly (probably somewhere in Ohio, date unknown), b. Oct. 1, 1806 in Jefferson Co., Ohio.     29 Adam was born during the summer of 1747 (or 1745) "at sea" or more likely Prince Georges Co., MD.
    20-2 1762 George Jacob Poe, Sr., was murdered and George Jacob Poe, Jr., inherited most of the estate by right of primature. His son, Andrew, went west soon afterward, first apprenticing
    his brother, Adam, to a shoemaker. His daughter, Kate, married Isaac Miller, a neighbor.
    29-1 1773 Andrew returned from PA and urged Adam to come west with him. Adam moved from Frederick, MD, to Ft. Pitt (recently Ft. Duquesne belonging to the French) where he joined the militia.     1776 Summer Adam volunteered for service as a private in Captain George McCormick's Company (militia), Colonel Cannon's PA Regiment for 14 days.

    1785-1794 Adam Poe was elected Captain of a company under Colonel Marshall to defend the frontier of western Pennsylvania against Indians and served at various times under Colonel Baird and Colonel David Williamson. The latter was greatly admired by Adam Poe and he named his youngest son, David Williamson Poe.
    50-11:8:8 1786 13 Jan The tract of land that Adam Poe selected in Washington Co. area, PA, was surveyed January 13, 1786, and was named "Poeville." It contained 377 acres adjoining lands of Matthew Ritchie, Isaac Miller*, and John Comly. He and Andrew had come to PA from New England (Maryland-LCW) at the same time as did Philip Jackson and Robert Wallace. Adam later sold this land and moved to Ohio.
    They also owned a tract of land prior to 1786 in Smith T., Washington Co. Area, PA, probably Westmoreland Co. at the time, where they lived at the time of the burining of Wallace's cabin. That tract was sold to Arthur Campbell.

    42-2 1800+ Adam Poe lived at Gavers, a little crossroad southwest of Lisbon, Columbiana Co., OH. It was named for his son-in-law, Rideon Gavers (connection yet to be discovered.)
    Columbiana Co., in Adam's time, included land just west of what is known as Stark Co., OH. Adam & Elizabeth are buried only a mile or so west of what is now Stark Co., OH.
    29 1840 28 Apr Adam Kuffle, David W. Poe, and David Kuffle testified that they had seen a page from the Poe family Bible listing the children born to Adam and Elizabeth Poe and it was written in German.
    20-2 Daisy Poe Pratt listed Adam's children in a slightly different order but she gave no DOB for any of them.
    16-2 1939 Sally (Poe) Kuffle claimed that Adam was married twice. He had, by his first marriage in PA, one daughter born. She claimed that Adam married twice, his daughter by his first marriage was Barbara who married a Mr. Cochran of PA. Adam's second marriage was to Betsey Matthews, widow of William Cochran. Betsey was an immigrant from Ireland. She came to this country when she was 12, the sister of a Presbyterian minister named William Matthews. Sally claimed that his brother, Andrew, born 1742, was six years older than Adam.

    Elizabeth had a brother , William Matthews, who was a Presbyterian preacher and wed his sister Elizabteth to Adam Poe.

    Elizabeth's first husband, William Cochran, died on the Ohio River while she was pregnant. This would have been 1774-75. This child was Rebecca, who eventually married John Hook.

    Her maiden name is also listed as Mathew.

    Some say birth year is 1756. Elizabeth came to America when she was 12 years old.

    Elizabeth was the widow of a William Cochran who was killed by Indians
    in 1774. She was an immigrant from the NW coast of Ireland and her maiden name is unknown.
    Various guesses have her named Smith - Cadman - Matthews.
    42-5 1774 Elizabeth was pregnant with Rebecca when William Cochran was killed.
    William had no other children recorded in the WV Collection.
    42-5 Glen Hook stated that his great-great-grandfather was John Hook
    (1747-1836), son of Mathias Hook who was founder of Hooksville, PA. John Hook married Rebecca Cochran (1775- ), daughter of William Cochran and Elizabeth Cadman.
    16-2 1939 Sally (Poe) Kuffle claimed that Adam was married twice. He had, by his first marriage in PA, one daughter born. She said that Adam's daughter by his first marriage was Barbara who married a Mr. Cochran of PA. Adam's second marriage was to Betsey Matthews, widow of William Cochran. Betsey was an immigrant from Ireland. She came to this country when she was 12, the sister of a Presbyterian minister named William Matthews. Sally claimed that his brother, Andrew, born 1742, was six years older than Adam.

    65 William A. Poe believed Elizabeth's maiden name to be Cadman.
    Claimed three Poe reunions were held every year in MI, Kentucky, and PA. (LCW-Those in MI are held every five years.)
