    Notes:

Matthias Shanor is also listed as German. People from the Alsace-Lorraine region are often listed as both French and German. Possibly from the Ehrstad, Baden, Germany area.

Matthias may have had more than one wife. Sophronia would have been over 50 to have had these younger children. It also means they would've gone several years without having kids when they were younger.

The land west of the Allegheny, and west and north of the Ohio, was considered Indian territory unit about 1795. East and South of these rivers was where Mathias and Sophronia Shaner raised their family. It is here on the East bank
of the Youghioghey river, where Shaner, PA is located in Westmoreland County. At one point in time they lived in Georgetown, PA, located South of the Ohio river near the Ohio State line.

After his discharge from the Army in the Revolutionary War, he remained in the 9th Virginia and was stationed at Frot Mc Intosh, where the Beaver River joins the Ohio and site of present day Beaver, PA. His "Tomahawk" claim of land was nearby. The 9th Virginia remained at Fort Mc Intosh until about 1783.

His pension application is dated around 1818, so he could not have died in 1807 like some claim.Death also listed as Feb 10, 1807, but isn't as his pension applicationl was dated around 1818.

May be closely related to the Ziegler family. Possibly from the Ehrstad, Baden, Germany area.[George Jacob Poe.FTW]

    MISCELLANEOUS
Hoffman A possible place of birth for Sophronia was Poe's Ferry, Frederick Co., MD.
Sophronia was probably the eldest child of Jacob Poe.
30p129&147 Source claims Sophronia was a sister of Andrew and Adam Poe.
??? One of the Revolutionary soldiers, not on previous lists, was Matthias Shanor who lived in the vicinity of Georgetown, PA, and who married Fanny Poe, sister of Andrew and Adam Poe, who later settled on the East Branch of Brady's Run in what is now Chippewa Township.
1904 This farm was owned by Squire Thomas Shanor.
42-4 In letter, 28nov 73, he claimed Andrew moved to Bedford Co and later persuaded Sophronia and Adam to join him. (Since Andrew didn't leave MD until 1762, this was quite a feat.)
42-8,76-3 1783 Both have this DOM for Fanny Poe and Matthias Shanor.

The confusion about his sons may come from the fact that he may have had at least 4 brothers (George, Adam, Henry, and John), at least 3 of whom he named his sons after. See the two Henry 'sons'

Sophronia (Poe) Shanor was said to be a sister of Andrew and Adam Poe but I have found no proof for the allegation. In his MONOCACY & CATOCTIN, Professor Schildknecht avers that she was their sister.

  1. George Jacob PFAU b. Abt 1715, Rhine River area, Lower Palatinate, Germany; d. 26 Jul 1762, Lewistown, Frederick, Maryland.

    Notes:
Surname was Pfau "Peacock" in Germany. It has been transliterated as Pow and Poe, settling on Poe. The famous writer Edgar Allen Poe was Irish, and had no children. Olive Glendora Poe always swore we were related to him (though that could be wishful thinking), but we are German Poes. Now the writer E. A. Poe said he was only Irish for a few generations and German before that, so we are may after all not related to him, but that would be buried back in time in Europe centuries ago with a branch of our German Poe's moving to Ireland and changing their name to Poe also . A signature of his shows name was originally Pfau.

This family was apparently wealthy and well-connected as they quickly amassed large tracts of land soon after arriving in America. They owned over 1300 acres and used indentured servants to work the land.[Lockhart.ftw]

    [EARLBAKE.FBK]
George Poe's origin is not well documented. Legends in our family indicated that the ancestors were Scotch-Irish and traceable to a Dr. Leonard Poe of England. However, several accounts indicate he came from the Rhine River (Lower Palatinate) area of Germany.

Since some residents of the British Islands searched for freedom on the continent before emigrating to America, Germany may have been a temporary residence. However, there was also a large emigration of Palatine reidents to America (Pennsylvania Dutch).

One account indicates immigration from Germany in 1746, but that would have been after the birth of Andrew Poe. There is no known indication that any of the children other than George, Jr. was not born in Maryland.

A family tree by Jeni Lyn Hunter shows an elder daughter, Sophronia Poe, born in 1730, Another accounts suggest she was from another family branch, but this unusual name was reportedly used for a great granddaughter. Other accounts mention both Catherine (Kate) and Sophronia (Fanny) as daughters but give no reliable information on birth dates.

    Notes...
Reportedly had large land grants from king near Frederick,MD. Settled by 1742 & revoked 1763 (Daisy Poe Platt, March 30, 1942). Murdered by one of his teamsters, Michael Peck, who was hanged. Peck was a Dutch indentured servant. Two accounts (Tom T. Jones & Adam Poe, Sr.) cite immigration in 1746. Jones stated that George Poe's grandmother was said to be Irish. By an account byJeni Lyn Hunter, was born in Rhine area, Germany, abt. 1715. Operated flouring mills for Baltimore market. Account by Randy Lee Everette shows last name Pfau & origin in Lower Palatinate. Most accounts cite emigration from Rhine Valley, Germany. There seems to be no reliable record of date of arrival in MD.[George Jacob Poe.FTW]

Murdered by one of his indentured servants, Michael Peck, a Dutchman.

Did George Jacob Pfau and family come from Germany or from Switzerland? Is there a possibility he was born here in PA, MD, or NC? The preponderence of allegations have him emigrating here from Germany. I've never found him on any passenger list. Aproximately 1/3 of the passenger lists of ships arriving at Philadelphia during the early years have been lost.
