Mary A. Ptaszek, a Democratic precinct committeewoman in Cleveland's Old Brooklyn neighborhood, died Friday at Parma Community General Hospital. She was 83.
    ....
She handled mailings, made calls and hosted the campaign headquarters for Democratic candidates at her home near Rhodes High School, which at various times was considered part of Wards 6, 9 and 15. She was a precinct committeewoman for each of those wards.
    ....
Mrs. Ptaszek served on the Democratic Executive Committee, helped Dennis Kucinich in his various election campaigns and was vice chairwoman for her brother Theodore Sliwa's candidacy for Cleveland City Council.
    ....
The Cleveland native attended Lincoln High School. She worked for several years in the personnel department of Precision Casting.
    ....
Mrs. Ptaszek was a lifelong member of St. Barbara Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a hostess for the parish's Memorial Day Committee and for the Golden Agers' trip to Poland.
    ....
After her mother died, Mrs. Ptaszek became her family's matriarch. Her siblings and their families became accustomed to gathering at her home for holiday meals.

"She was good-hearted to everybody and very community-minded," her brother said.

  1. Adam SLIWA b. 24 Nov 1887, ,, Poland; d. 28 Feb 1988, Brunswick, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

    Notes:
There may be two Adam's in Cleveland at the time of this marriage. One may have spelled his name SLIVA. He also had a brother named Frank. Attempt to unravel this family connection.

    QUESTION from Sandra Rozhon:
In my possession, a 1934 photo labeled:
Helen M. Sliwa and Clara Sliwa
    94 Gibson St.
    Buffalo, N.Y.
(One or both are wearing Communion outfits)
Are these the daughters of Adam and Antoinette?

    REPLY:
The answer is probably, no. First that does not look like my mother or my aunt. My mother, Helen would have been 19 and my aunt Clara several years older. My mother's middle initial was "T".
    ----Jim Broz

    CONCLUSION:
Upon checking the records at St. Barbara's in Cleveland, Helen and Clara, daughters of Adam and Antoinette, made their Communion in 1923.

    Notes:
~John Wojnarowski told me that he didn't think the father of Rev. Jarosz came to this country and that Jarosz is a common name like Smith. He recalls the mother as a widow but he didn't know where she lived. Dora Wolowiec told my mother that Anna lived for a time in the rectory with her son and then lived upstairs by Dora's sister's house.

    SOURCE_OF_NAME:
The obituary of his son Rev. Joseph Jarosz.

    RESIDENCES:
The ship manifest for Josef Jarosz shows that his destination was his father, Tony Jarosz, at 3701 Redman Ave., Cleveland. There is no such address on Redman, so it's possible that they lived at 3701 W13th St.
1920 - 1225 Redman Ave., Cleveland, Ohio (listed in 1920 Census as YAROSH, Anton

    DEATH:
This MIGHT be Anthony Jarosz, though it seems unlikely because this date of death is BEFORE his son, Josef arrived in the U.S.:
