Born at home (3705 West 14th St). St. Barbara's school records show her birthdate as Nov 9, 1915 and her baptism date as Nov 15, 1915 which is contrary to the October birth month Julia recognised as her correct month. The card specifies that the date was obtained as a parent's statement, which is understandable since Julia was born at home and the family had probably never applied for a birth certificate.

Employed by The May Co. Department Store and then Higbee's Department Store as a gift wrapper and packer.

Moved to 3618 West 47th when the city took her neighborhood for the Jennings Freeway. Notes:
    IMMIGRATION:
Per Julia Kapusta Rozhon, Ludwig, Anthony, and Henry arrived in the U.S. in 1906 after leaving Poland to avoid the military draft, however, on the 1920 Census, Ludwig listed 1902 as his arrival date in the U.S. He also is listed as PA under the column for Aliens/Naturalized -- which may mean he filed papers by 1920.

    OCCUPATION:
Grocer/Butcher - Ran a meat market at 3701 West 14th Street, Cleveland, Ohio.

    BIOGRAPHY:
In Poland, Ludwig lived across the river from Hedwig, but didn't meet her till he was in the U.S. He and his family were uneducated because there were no schools in the small town of Mielec. In the U.S., he settled in Cleveland, Ohio. He built a "Sears & Roebuck" house at 3705 West 14th Street, where he lived the remainder of his life. His butcher shop was next door on the corner of West 14th Street and Redman Ave. He raised chickens in the coop in the backyard. He also owned two lots directly across the street from his home (westerly side of W.14th) where he had a large garden plot. In this garden, he had several bee hives, and at various time had a goat and turkeys.

    CENSUS:
1910 - Not found. Might have been boarding somewhere on the southside.
    1920 - 3701 W.14th St. (ED95, Sheet 9A, Lines 12-16 , Ward 6)
    1930 - 3705 W.14th St. (ED77, Sheet 4A, Lines 17-22, Ward 6) PARCEL NUMBER 008-28-063

    RESIDENCES:
Ludwig purchased a Sears, Roebuck house kit and built his own home (which still exists) at 3705 West 14th St., Cleveland, Ohio.

    DEATH:
    Coronary Thrombosis

    BURIAL:
Calvary Cemetery, Sec 114, Lot 258 Grave 2. Stone is 3ft long x 1 ft wide. KAPUSTA across top. On the left, "Louis J. 1884-1948"

    OBIT:
    Name: Kapusta, Ludwig
    Date: Aug 14 1948
    Source: Cleveland Press
Notes: Kapusta, Ludwig, beloved husband of Hedwig, father of Raymond, Matthew, Julia Rozhon and Eleanor Hronec; and grandfather. Services Mon., Aug. 16, at 8:30 a. m., from residence, 3705 W. 14th St., and 9 a. m. from St. Barbara's Church.

  5. Ludwig m. Jadwiga (Hedwig) JEMIOLA, ** Abt 1909, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA. Jadwiga (daughter of Jozef (Joseph) JEMIOLO, ** and Veronica WALEK, **) b. 7 Jun 1889, Dobrynin , Mielec ,Rzeszów , Poland; d. 20 Feb 1958, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA; bur. 24 Feb 1958, Calvary Cemetary, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA. 6. Jadwiga (Hedwig) JEMIOLA, ** b. 7 Jun 1889, Dobrynin , Mielec ,Rzeszów , Poland; d. 20 Feb 1958, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA; bur. 24 Feb 1958, Calvary Cemetary, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA.

    Notes:
    BIRTH:
Family celebrated her birthday on 20th of June but birth records from Poland indicated birth was on 7th of June. Was Poland on a different calendar system?

Back in Poland, the Jemiolo family lived in one room house with a river behind it.

    IMMIGRATION:
Her daughter, Julia, said that Jadwiga travelled with Lottie Woskowicz's mother (probably Anna ). The manifest is indexed as Jadwiga FEMIOLO. Obvious transcription mistake on the initial of the surname. Port of departure was Bremen, Germany. She arrived on 14 May 1907 at New York City on the ship Prinzess Alice. She was listed as 17 years old (though it looks like a 12, the penmanship for that time put a line through the number 7, so the lighter lower part of the 7 makes it look like a 2), single, occupation= servant. Her destination was her brother Franciszek Jemiolo in Cleveland, Ohio. Her brother's address appears to be 470 Niles or Nilen or Miles Street. Other JEMIOLO names were found listed under FEMIOLO and YEMIOLO.

No one has ever mentioned that Jozef came to the United States but a manifest was found listing someone with this same name and of a similar age coming from Niwiska (small village near Dobrynin). This individual arrived in the U.S. in 13 Mar 1903 on the S.S. Barbarosa sailing from Bremen. Listed as married, age 43. Destination was his cousin Jozef (unreadable but possibly something like PEKLAK or PEKAR) in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1999, 49 Polish provinces were reduced to 16 and given new names. Rzeszów is now Podkarpackie. The town of Mielec was located between Debice and Sandomierz, on the River Wisloka. Its population was about evenly divided between Jews and Poles.
