Brown was in the War of 1812, and respondedto the call for the defence of Stonington Aug. 9 and 10, 1814, in theThird Company -- Jesse Breed, Captain; William Frink, Lieutenant; DudleyBrown (205), Ensign. Company consisted of forty men, officers andprivates. For his service he received a United States land warrant of 160acres of land.

    Two elderly ladies now living, in 1906, remember her as astately andhandsome woman of strong personality and superiorexecutive ability. Fromthis can be inferred -- and it isbelieved the inference is right -- thatshe was a very superiorwoman in intellect and sweetness of disposition.No ordinarywoman could have left after her death that secret andpotentinfluence which keeps a name alive in a family through somanygenerations. Her blood flows in her descendants, and theyrecognizeand glory in the fact by preserving her maiden name.It is noticeable, asit appears even to the present time.

During his youthand young manhood, and beforehe reached his majority, he becameacquainted with Miss FearSturgess, of Yarmouth, Mass., whose house heoften visited withincreasing pleasure, until they were married, Nov. 21,1698.Miss Sturgess was the daughter of Edward Sturgess, who came tothiscountry from England to Charlestown, Mass., in 1634, andsettled inYarmouth. Mr. Holmes bought large tracts of land inStonington, Conn., nowNo. Stonington, near Wyassup Pond, uponwhich he built a dwelling house,which he occupied during hislife. He had nine children. Thomas Holmes,their son, ismentioned with Daniel Brown as giving the land for theFirstBaptist Church, now No. Stonington.
