MARRIAGE: Divorced from one of his wives in 1875.

    [JohnCheney.FTW]

Reuben Charles Cheney (middle name added by himself) came to America in 1845 stopping in Poughkeepsie NY where he worked for a Mr. Hunter. Later he traveled to Avon, Lorain Co., OH and bought a 75 acre farm with his brother Luke on Bradley Rd., Dover Twp., Cuyahoga Co., 1/4 mile south of the New York Central and St Louis Railroad, known as the Kidney farm. He eventually moved to Branch Co., MI in the 1850's where he bought a farm with his brother John near Ovid Center. About 1856 he married Martha Lovejoy at Stueben Co., NY. He took his bride back to Michigan. (From the notes of Ralph H. Cheney)

When Martha died in 1861 after giving birth to a daughter, Reuben had gone back to Ohio and there married Elizabeth Ann Blanchett in Avon, Lorain Co., OH. Reuben and Elizabeth settled on a farm near Ovid, MI. Elizabeth died in 1867 11 days after giving birth to twin daughters.

Reuben remarried 3 more times but had no more children.

Notes from Virginia Stickan - December 2001:

My local source says that Reuben was born 14 Apr 1824. Baptism record says he was born 11 Aug 1824, England, Film 597075, item 4: Wesleyan Church of Market-Harborough England, Births and Baptisms, 1814-1837. His middle name was added by himself.

He came to America in 1845 stopping in Poughkeepsie, NY. He worked for a Mr. Hunter, later coming to Avon, Lorain Co., Ohio. He bought a 75 acre farm (known as the Kidney Farm) with his brother Luke on Bradley Rd., Dover Twp., Cuyahoga Co., OH. Ralph Cheney's Biographical Sketch Note states that Eli Cheney proceeded directly to Lorain County, Ohio where, in company with his brother Reuben, he bought a farm on which he lived nearly six years. Subsequently Reuben went to Branch Co., MI in the 1850's and bought a farm with his brother John near Ovid Center.

After Reuben's first wife, Martha Lovejoy, died, he brought his second wife, Elizabeth Ann Blanchett from Ohio to Michigan settling on a farm in Bethel Twp., Branch Co., MI. Reuben's third wife, Matilda Blanchett, nee Chester, also came to Michigan from Ohio. Matilda was the widow of Charles Blanchett and sister of Reuben and William Chester. This third marriage ended in divorce about 1870.

His fourth marriage was to Emily Wilson of Ovid Twp., Branch Co., MI in 1875. She died a few months later. He then married Mrs. Maria Rappalye, nee Van Nice (Vannuys). She outlived him and later married Rev. Norton. Maria Rappalye had the following children with her former husband: Lucretia, Ella, George, Jenny, Frank, Amanda and May
