~CORRESPONDENCE:
genealogygal2@juno.com (Laura Hine)
Ok, my husband just got home and he asked around today at work and no one
heard of Sunfish Pond, but they all know Sonny's Pond. When we really got
to talking about this and I had the name from you, Mark called his Uncle,
who, like I said, was born in 1930. He remembered this right away and
said he remembers it was when he was about 10 years old. Mark's Uncle Lee
(last name Angiocchi) was standing up at the top of the hill (standing on
E. 72nd and Marcelline - Marcelline being one street north of Bletch Ct.
that I mentioned previously) when the police brought the body of this boy
up the hill. On this hill, there were what my husband called the "Red
Steps". These steps were there for the men to walk down the hill to go to
the brickyards. The brickyards were actually located on Warner Rd. Uncle
Lee remembers that the police had to take turns carrying the boy up the
hill. Bill Bauer was the Police Chief at the time, and Uncle Lee
remembers this because he knew that Bill Bauer couldn't help carry the boy
up because he was very out of shape. Uncle Lee said that this pond was
always known as Sonny's as far as he can remember. This is what the
Cuyahoga Heights kids called it, but he said that perhaps the Goosetown
kids (those up on War would fall into that category) may have called it
Sunfish Pond. He said that there were fish in that pond, bluegills and
sunfish! It was the only pond of any appreciable size when he was a kid.
Uncle Lee said that the police found an old hot water tank in the pond.
They suspect that he might have hit his head on it while diving in. He
was down there with friends and he dove in and the friends didn't see him
for a while. Uncle Lee wasn't actually at the pond when the accident took
place, he just remembers them bringing up the body and hearing what
everyone thought happened. He didn't remember the name when Mark
mentioned that it was James Zielinski, and neither did his wife. His
wife, Connie (nee Kaliszewski), lived up on Deveny.
......
My husband said that his grandma and mom told him to stay out of that
valley - that there was quicksand, bums and cooties down there. Being a
boy, of course he wanted to check it out and did and got in trouble often
for it. My husband is going to do a little checking for you - there's a
woman in the village that is the daughter of a retired Police Chief, and
he will see what she might know. Also, he'll find out if there are still
Police Reports from back then. If I were you and you wish to know more,
you might want to get the Coroner's report. I'll be in touch when I hear
anything else.
......
Oh, one last thing. Mark said that there were a few ponds down in that
valley. One was down below Hillside Party Center, then further south,
there was Sonny's as we have talked about, and further south than that,
kinda butting up to Bacci park today was another one. But, Sonny's was
the largest.
