    Notes:
"The leader of the mob was a large, burly and murderous demon. He told
grandmother if she would denounce Mormonism she would be unmolested. Her
strength and faith in our Gospel was very significant and she faced this
wicked man with defiance and dignity, stomping her foot and saying: "You
may burn it and bedamned." His answer was, "I'll give you twenty
minutes to get out." With thehelp of the seven children she gathered
the most necessary and needful articles and threw them into a wagon.
There was no time for packing. She had no team of horses; but she had
one ox and a cow. The boys yoked them together to the wagon and drove
away bidding farewell to their home. Grandmother suddenlyremembered a
fat pig ready to kill, so she sent the boys back to see if it had been
spared. It was burned to a crisp. They joined a company of Saints who
were on their way to Council Bluffs. In the company was a man by the name
of William Draper. He soon proposed marriage. She felt more secure
having a husband and father for herself and children. They were married
January 8, 1846but soon Martha passed away leaving another son, Almon,
    born in 1847."

Myfather, Gilbert Weaver, was fourteen years old at the time of his
mother's death. Like most boys of that age disappointments were hard to
take. With the absence of his two brothers, who had been called to join
the Mormon Battalion, and now the loss of his mother, he was desperate,
so he made up his mind tohide in one of the wagons, since the journey by
his own family to Utah had necessarily been postponed. He had a cousin
whose name was Guernsey Brown, whowas leaving immediately with a
company; so, he stowed away in Brown's wagon and was not discovered until
they camped the first night. Brown sent word backto Council Bluffs that
the Weaver boy was with him and that he would take him on to Salt Lake
City. Father was very grateful to him and helped all he could by driving
the teams and taking his turn driving the cattle. He told thisstory
many times and spoke of his love for Guernsey Brown. [Mrs. Ida Rachel
    Weaver Haycock]
