    Notes:
    [Spicer Family File.FTW]

He was in Plymouth, New England before 6 Mar 1637/38 when he with others applied to be made a freeman of the colony. He is believed to have been the first religious teacher at Marshfield, MA where on 5 May 1640 he was on a committee to measure some land. He sailed to Stratford, CT in 1644. He was
granted land at New London, CT in 1652. About 1655 he settled on a farm at Smith Lake, Poquomock. He had many grants of land and raised sheep extensively. He wove cloth from the wool.

: Smith, Nehemiah, by Miss Thomas thought to be first
religious teacher at Marshfield, I hear no more of, excc. that in an eminently
confusing obituary on page 82 of Geneal. Reg. XIV, Ann, a daughter of the first
Thomas Bourne, is said to marry Rev. Nehemiah Smith in 1639.
Nehemiah, New Haven, had Sarah, and Mary, born 1642; Hannah,, 1644, all
baptised 14 December 1645; Mercy nad Elizabeth 1645, both baptised 22 February
1646; all in right of his wife Sarah; kept the sheep of the town 1644-9 and
removed soon after to New London, and about 1660 to Norwich, freeman 1669, died
1686, leaving wife Ann and four daughters, Mary, wife of Samuel Raymond; Ann,
Wife of Thomas Bradford; Elizabeth wife of Joshua Raymond; and Experience, who
married 1 November 1677, Joshua Abel.

!History of Norwich, New London County, Connecticut , Frances Manwaring Caulkins, 1976, page 200: From an entry in the records of the county court in 1666, we learn his age: "Nehemiah Smith of Norwich declaring himself above 60 years of age and his brother John declaring the same at his earnest desire is freed from training." He died in 1686. His only son, Nehemiah, born in 1646, at New Haven,
settled in Groton, where he was generally designated, from the office that he
    held, Mr. Justice Smith.
