Search for the Passengers of the Mary and John, 1630, Vol 14, 1990, p 20-21:
Elderkin, John (1616-1687) of New London, CT. English home: He came on the
"Recovery of London" from Weymouth, Dorset, in 1634 (NGSQ 71:172) but Snow-
Estes says he came from Fenns, Lincolnshire. Savage (2:107) says he was in
Lynn MA. (1637) and New London, CT. (1651)
History of New London County by Hurd: He was at Dedham, Massachusetts
in 1641. He was granted land in New London, Connecticut about 1650.
He was a house carpenter and millwright. He worked with Thomas Wells on mills
and meeting houses. The earliest vote concerning a mill in New London was 11
December 1660 which was the renewal of a contract made at Saybrook 26 February
1655 between John Elderkin and the Town of Moheagan to erect a corn mill at
No-Man's Acre. The mill was soon moved to below the falls. The mill and
miller's house stood there for many years.
History of Norwich, Connecticut, Frances Manwaring Caulkins, 1976, page 119:
In 1673 the town contracted with John Elderkin to build forthwith a new meeting
house. The site fixed for it was the summit of the hill, towering over the
Green, and looking east and west toward the two ends of the town-plot. The
country was at this period in a disturbed condition. The atmosphere was dark
with the shadows of approaching evil. On the western border of New England the
Dutch had assumed a threatening attitude, and several of the larger Indian
tribes appeared surly and vindictive. | John ELDERKEN

A Worldtree entry shows that his death probably occured after 1871, but it seems unlikely if it really is his wife who appears in the 1850 census in Brooklyn, Cuyahoga County, Ohio (see her record for exact page). It is really likely that it IS her because she is living the next house over from her brother and has two of her brother's children living with her, but her husband is not shown. So it is possible that he died prior to 1850, or he might have been travelling when the census was taken.

ELLIOT, "one of the hired speakers employed by certain public service corporations to fight the raise of tax rates on corporations, is attorney for the Japanese Association of America." ELLIOT had been reading "Hamlet" from a set of volumes of Shakespeare's plays, and remarked as he set the book down and went to dinner that if ever there were a fire, he would save that set of books. When she visited, the women and children would then drive into San Francisco and meet him for lunch before going to the zoo. She remembers him coming home from work and sitting in his big leather chair. He would burn incense because he didn't like the smell of dinner cooking, and would play "The Mikado" or "H.M.S. Pinafore." He loved opera. She called him "Papa'".

(2,7) She was a small woman, with size 2 shoes. She always kept various exotic birds in a cage in the kitchen as pets, and she would talk to them whenever she was in the kitchen.
(2,7) She began to be crippled with rheumatoid arthritis at about age 35. As the disease progressed, it became more and more difficult for her to perform any physical activity, but she was determined that she should not be bedridden. Handles were installed throughout the house so that she would be able to move about on her own. At one point, she fell and broke her hip, and the doctors told her she would never walk again, but she was determined that she would, and she did, with assistance. When she fell and broke her hip a second time, it became almost impossible for her to walk, and she spent more and more of her day in bed. She was given cortisone to take, and it made her skin extremely sensitive, so that it would turn black and blue if bruised even slightly. When at last it became too painful for her to rise from her bed, the end was near. Despite her pain, she was always a very loving grandmother, and her courage was an inspiration.

Eleazor Holmes Ellis was born in the Town of Preble on his father's farm on August 26, 1826. His father was A. G. Ellis and a farmer and the founder of the first newpaper published in Wisconsin, The Green Bay Intelligencer, published December 11, 1833 to June 1, 1836.
Mayor E.H. Ellis 1860
In the days when law schools were not known, he entered the office of Henry S. Baird and pursued his studies. Upon reaching the age of 21, he was admitted to the bar and immediately began his brilliant career. His examination was conducted in a room of the Washington House, which was located at the northern extremity of Washington Street, then a long sandy thoroughfare with low wooden building dotted at regular intervals, their contents smacking more of the fur trader's outposts than the average village store.
For two and a half years he practiced in Manitowoc, and then returned to Green Bay. His legal practice soon became widespread, not alone in his own town but throughout Wisconsin.
In 1872, he was elected circuit judge of the tenth judicial district and held that office until 1879, when he tendered his resignation to again take up the pratice of law, believing that greater financial remuneration was to be found there. His first partner was William H. Norris, and when Mr. Norris moved to Minneapolis, Mr. Ellis and G. G. Greene formed a partnership and later on Judge Ellis entered into partnership with S. D. Hastings, Sr., W. J. Green and H. J. Fenbee.
He was twice a candidate for a seat on the supreme court bench, once in 1866 and again in 1891.
Eleazor was married three times. His first wife was Harriet Sovina Gilbert. They were married at Christ Church, Green Bay, on February 26, 1850. They had two sons, Albert Gallatin ( April 6, 1851-March 2, 1888) and Gilbert (October 9, 1852-August 30,1860). Harriet died August 26, 1854 in Green Bay at age 23.
He then married Eliza D. Chappel on May 19, 1858 in Rockford, Illinois. This union brought seven children: Virginia (October 29, 1859-April 19, 1865), Ruth (September 24, 1861-February 11, 1905), Frank Holmes (October 15, 1863-September 17, 1884), Grace (November 12, 1865-March 12, 1886), Frederick Wolcott (August 3, 1867-August 10, 1867), Jenny May (July 28, 1871), and James Wolcott (July 14, 1874-August 2, 1952). Eliza died on November 27, 1878 in Green Bay at age 40.
Eleazor then married Ruth K. Gillette on April 25, 1881, in Detroit, Michigan. This marriage brought no children.
E. H. Ellis was Mayor of Green Bay in 1860, and was also postmaster from January 19, 1896 to April 1, 1900, alderman, and register of deeds of Brown County.
He died at age 80 at his home of old age and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. | Eleazer Holmes ELLIS
