In 1815 came Jerusha RAY (Mrs. Amos BRAINARD) and Dorothy ELY (Mrs. William BRAINARD). Harriet and Charlotte, daughters of the latter, have lived single in the old home. They were fine looking women and so witty and genial that their society was much sought and young girls were always delighted to receive an invitation to the home of the ?BRAINARD girls.? The sisters made a beautiful home and an art of housekeeping.

From Kevin R. Arnold (gr.gr.gr.grandson of Jacob J. Ely):
"During his school years he developed an interest in writing. He created his own newspaper called the Penny Gazette in which he wrote short stories about his family, friends and trips to far away lands. After his schooling he became a physician... Jacob served in the Civil War in Company D of the PA 141st Regiment in 1862. He was stationed around Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia, but he never got the chance to see battle. He mainly did guard duty and helped care for the wounded. Jacob kept a diary of everything he did while he served in the army (which I have). He was discharged in Feb. 1863 due to illness. I have his musket with bayonet. Another younger brother died at Chancellorsville, VA in 1863.
Jacob married twice and had 1 son and 3 girls. His youngest daughter was Laura Ely who married William West Rolles. They had 1 daughter, Laura Ernestine Rolles who is my grandmother and is still living at the age of 91 in Florida. (e-mailed 8/19/98)

Lyman taught school in the old log house (the first home occupied by Zelophehad's family) in the winter of 1821-2. The first frame house (still standing [in 1889], but not the present residence) was built in 1819.
