REFN: 303 | Joseph FISH
|
11252 |
The descendancy of Joseph Fish was provided by a fellow genealogist who is highly reliable.
The following excerpt taken from "History of the Fish Family" by Cynthia Fish Hunt:
"Joseph Fish was the fourth son of Joseph and Abigail Lathrop Fish and was born in Montville, New London Co., Conn March 13, 1784. When quite a lad he came with his parents into the state of New York settling in Little Falls, Herkermer Co., where they kept tavern in a double log house. When Joseph became of age he left home to make his own way in the world, bidding the family goodbye and never saw his mother again, for she died soon after.
He went into Onondaga County, where the city of Syracuse now stands and was engaged in boiling salt for a time. Eventually he went into the town of Otisco where his brother Uriah had located a farm and began making improvements. He there made himself useful in wielding the axe for he was an expert chopper and the conutry was almost an unbroken wilderness. In the course of time he formed new acquaintances for he was of a genial nature and fond of company.
Very soon the adloining town of Marcellus held a strong attraction for him in the person of Cynthia Barrows, whose acquaintance he had made and who eventually became his wife."
See Cynthia Barrows for more excerpts from Cynthia Fish Hunt.
-Also-
There is an article written by his son Lemuel, about 1884. He only said that Joseph "was born in Connecticut, March 15, 1784 of English descent. He came to Onondaga, NY, while yet a young man in which state he married and there was born to him six sons and six daughters." | Joseph FISH
|
11253 |
Uriah's grandson, Albert, had a biography that named Uriah's parents as Joseph and Abigail Fish. The only Joseph and Abigail Fish found in the correct time frame married in Connecticut are Joseph Fish and Abigail Lothrop. This coupled with the following excerpt about another son, Joseph, taken from "History of the Fish Family" by Cynthia Fish Hunt is presented as incomplete but moderately sufficient proof that this couple is indeed the parents of Uriah Fish:
"Joseph Fish was the fourth son of Joseph and Abigail Lathrop Fish and was born in Montville, New London Co., Conn March 13, 1784. ... He went into Onondaga County, where the city of Syracuse now stands ... Eventually he went into the town of Otisco where his brother Uriah had located a farm ..."
See the notes under the son Joseph for a more complete quotation.
One internet source shows his death as: August 8, 1835 age 84 in Little Falls, Herkimer Cty, NY
The book "Early Connecticut Marriages Prior to 1800", 5th book edited by Rev Frederick W Bailey and published in 1902 lists Joseph Fish and Abigail Lothrop as having married in Bozrah, Connecticut on 7/4/1776. This is the Joseph Fish/Abigail marriage listed in any of this set of books. | Joseph FISH

BIOGRAPHY:
From "Portrait and Biographical Album of Branch County, Mich." pg.510:
"Levi Fish was but eighteen months old when the sad event of his mother's death deprived him of her care. He was reared on his father's farm until he was seventeen years of age, at which time his father died, and he then went to learn the trade of carpenter and joiner, having four brothers working at the same trade. He was an active, capable, energetic youth, soon gained the mastery of his calling, and in a few years had laid up money enough to become independent, when he married, in April, 1847, Miss Elizabeth Sawtell. She was born in England, and came with her parents to the United States, and they having a large family of children to support, she was adopted by a family by the name of Sawtell, by whom she was raised as their own. Her original name was Mosey."
BIOGRAPHY: An article from the Coldwater, MI newspaper, dated February 28, 1908, that details the life of Levi Fish and Elizabeth Mosey. Per the article, Levi was born in Brooklyn Township, Cuyahoga County Ohio July 31, 1821, the fourth son of twelve children (no mention of parent's names or other sibling's names). He married Elizabeth Mosey, April 30, 1846 (no mention of location, but presumably in Cuyhoga County). Elizabeth was born February 13, 1827 in Yorkshire, England. They came to Branch County, MI on March 15, 1869, where they purchased the land that they still live on (in 1908). At the time of the article, they had lived on the farm near Marble Lake (section 32) for thirty nine years. Levi and Elizabeth had four children, one of whom died in infancy. Those living are Fred Fish of Coldwater, and Mrs. Maria A. Luse and Mrs. Ida Corless, both living near their parents in Quincy, MI. The article also states that five days after the fall of Fort Sumpter, Levi enlisted in the artillery branch of the service. He was at the battle of Carrick's Ford.
The 1860 census lists Levi as being 28 and his wife as 31, but if that were true, then he was only 15 when his first daughter was born. The census is most likely wrong.
In 1870, Levi was living with his daughter, Maria, and son-in-law, DeWitt Luce in Michigan. | Levi FISH

Lydia Hook - Obituary
Lydia Hook, wife of Stephen Hook (deceased) May 6th, 1885. Mrs. Hook was born in Connecticut Feb. 21st, 1821; married July 5, 1841; came to Wisconsin in the fall of 1842; has resided in the town of Oregon about 40 years. She had been a christian from childhood, and a member of the M. E. church over 50 years. She was a kind neighbor and retained the confidence of all who knew her. She evinced the fact that a christian life - a life measuring up to the profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ - is the sweetest and best on earth. Her last words to her children were, "meet me in Heaven." She suffered much during her illness but bore up with great fortitude. Seven children - four boys and three girls, - with many relatives, mourn their loss. The funeral took place from the Brooklyn church May 8th, conducted by the pastor, C. C. Swartz.
