12126 He had been a river boat captain; and later a partner with Ross McCloud in gold mining. He and "Uncle Dick" Mannon bought a 1/2 interest in Upper Soda Springs from Ross. He married Mary two years after Ross died, by following her to Iowa to win her hand there with her family. Four years later he completed a new hotel building at Upper Soda Springs in 1874 and died in November of that same year, followed by Mary's death a month later. (Moral: Don't work yourself to death contstructing buildings.) He built the new hotel after the model of the cabins on the river boats he captained, with the floor of the rooms higher than the deck (veranda) around the cabins. This well built hotel like a river boat without the boat was a favorite summer vacation resort for hundreds of guests and lasted until torn down for lumber when it was scarce in 1945 during WWI. He is buried in the family cemetery in Yreka with Ross, Mary, Lucy McCloud and Elda McCloud Masson, John Masson, and Uncle Dick-Richard Mannon. Issac FRY

12127 1. FRY, not FREY. Buried in Old Mill Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, Hookstown, PA, near Route 168. The marker says she died in 1888, age 82, meaning her birth year would be 1806, not 1804, but folks back then often did not truly know their exact age.

2. Claims that the writer Edgar Allan Poe had once come to the Hookstown, PA area, "the West" back then, to visit the Poes and that he was thrown out because he was a drunk. The writer apparently has claimed that his line of Poes was only in Ireland a few generations, so maybe his line and ours has some very distant connection.

3. This may be Lydia and dau Sarah on the 1880 census. It would be more consistent with dieing in 1888 at age 82 (born 1806). Dau Sarah supposedly married a Mr. Stewart but she is listed on this census entry as "S"(ingle). Needs further research.

4. Possible conflict: It is unlikely that Lydia Poe (b 1839) and her mother (same given name - Lydia Fry b 1804) died on exactly the same day. Needs further research.
