Lieutenant in militia; Selectman for Stow, 1724, 1735, 1747, 1751, and 1752. Served on town committee, 1724, and as tithinman and fence viewer. Buried at Stow. Listed by Savage and NEHGR, July , 1966.

Man of good standing in Stow, where he resided. He was shosen at various time by his fellow-townsmen, to act on local committes.

Daniel and Anna conveyed their homestead estate to him and it is presumed that their last days were spent with him. This homestead portion was the so called "Gates Farm," which Stephen Gates bought of an Indian in 1684. The conveyance from the aboriginal owner is on record in Middlesex Registry of deeds, vol. ix; page 57. The original instrument, engrossed on parchment and in good preservation, is still in existence in Stow.

1) Name, Husband, DOD, residence -taken from Father Ithamar
Rowley's will.
a. It is impossible to make out what her residence was. It is
hopelessly illegible.
b. On 4/3/1830 Deborah Carrsignature on service papers. She was
not a minor, therefore her dob must have been before 1810.

2) Residence - on 4/6/1830, signature of Dimmis Robinson on service

12516 Research and source notes: Deborah Sweet -
1)There is a Third Mayflower connection (others are through ALDEN &
MULLINS via SOUTHWORTH), through the FULLERline, (said FULLER line also
connecting with the ROWLEY line). More work needs to be done to verify -
ie, documentation. It is on various ROWLEY & FULLERonline sites, showing
her ancestry as given in this report.
Edward FULLER>Samuel Fuller m. Jane (Lathrop)>John Fuller m. Mehitable
(ROWLEY, sis of Moseswho m. Mary Fletcher and was the Gr.Gfthr of
Ithamar Rowley, Dimmis's Husband)>John Fuller m. Mary Cornwall>Esther
Fuller m. Stephen GATES>Dimmis Gates m. Ithamar Rowley
This line makes Dimmis & Ithamar 2nd cousins, ie., their Gr.Grandparents
were brother and sister.
2) DOD - a. not later than 12/20/1825 -based on her Husband,
Ithamar Rowley's Will/Estate papers (see his notes forcomplete
transcription), being the date the will was written. No mention ismade
of wife, or former wife, or deceased wife Dimmis in any of the papers
relating to the 'will of real estate of Ithamar Rowley'. b. CEMETERY
VISIT, 7/7/01 - She is buried next to Ithamar, her stone is so badly
deteriorated, and had been poorly repaired at one time, that the dates
are almost impossible to make out. It reads as follows:
Sacred to the memory of Dimmis consortof Ithamar Rowley, Deceased
?September, October?, day is illegible, 182--(covered by badly rusting
iron strap), Aged 71 years, 10 months, --day(s?).
From the "Aged" given, I extrapolated the DOD to have been in either
Septemberor October of 1824, based on her verified DOB, even though the
stone COULD say April 11, but this is impossible to say with certainty. A
check of the cemetery records needs to be made. The 1824 date does fit in
with the above reasoning that she must have died before Ithamar made his
will in 1825.
c. DAR appl. of Dorothy Rowley (op cit, see Esther
Fuller notes) give DOD of 1/31/1829- I believe that the year was misread
off the stone, and that the 1829 should be 1824, again, because Ithamar's
1825 will does not name her at all. The 1/31 may be correct. It is to be
noted, however, that all other dates pertaining to Ithamar and Dimmis are
correct on the application.
3) The births of all of the children are in the Barbour Collection
for Chatham, Vol. 6, p. 137
4) Dimmis's birth is recorded at Middletown. Barbour Collection, Vol.
26, Middletown, Part I, A-J, p. 213
Gates, Demmis d Step[he]n & Esther born November23, 1752 Vol.2
page 323; she was, however, probably actually born in Chatham

12530 BIOGRAPHY:
GATES, HOLSEY (HALSEY) (1799-2 Nov. 1865) was an early set?ler of the WESTERN RESERVE and the namesake for the village of GATES MILLS in Mayfield Twp. Born in East Haddam, CT, to Nathaniel and Hannah Gates, the family moved to Delhi, NY in 1815 following Nathaniel's death. Soon after, Gates' brother and sister (Jeremiah Gates and Clarissa Gates Brainerd) moved to northeastern Ohio, with Jeremiah eventually settling in the village of BROOKLYN (Old Brooklyn) and opening a sawmill with the assistance of brother Nathaniel, who permanently settled there ca. 1824.

BIOGRAPHY: Holsey Gates, the youngest of the 3 brothers, arrived in the area in 1825. A master miller who had accumulated much capital and milling equipment, he surveyed and purchased a 130-acre mill site in the Chagrin River Valley in Mayfield Twp. In 1826, Gates relocated with wife Lucy Ann and mother Hannah to a log cabin at the site, and over the next year he dammed the river, dug a mill race, and erected a sawmill and gristmill. The operation of these water-powered industries stimulated the development of Gates Mills. Over the next quarter-century, Gates designed and built structures in and around the village, including the Gates Mills Inn (part of the CHAGRIN VALLEY HUNT CLUB, which burned down in 1994). In 1842 he constructed a larger, more "modern" gristmill on the Chagrin River, powered by four water wheels. The original mill was converted into a rake factory. Gates also helped to fund, design and build the Gates Mills Methodist Episcopal church. The Greek Revival structure (now known as St. Christopher's by the River) was completed in 1855. Gates married Lucy Ann Bradley prior to moving to Ohio. The couple had 9 children. Gates was buried in Woodland Cemetery.

BIOGRAPHY: Gates's most prolific offspring was his son, Washington Gates (1827-12 Aug. 1897), a prominent architect, builder and water power industrialist who helped to develop CHAGRIN FALLS TOWNSHIP and BEDFORD . Born in Gates Mills, Washington Gates apprenticed under his father. In all, the Gates family designed and erected 18 structures in Gates Mills. After 1865, Washington built and operated a rake factory (with brother William) in Toledo; he moved to Chagrin Falls in 1868, where he purchased a grist mill. As a prominent businessman, Gates was soon a member of the Chagrin Falls Village Council. In 1873, Gates began construction of an Italian/Victorian residence on the corner of Pearl (now Washington) and Walnut streets in Chagrin Falls, which was purchased by the village in 1938 for use as the Village Hall. Gates, along with his son Holsey M [sic] (1855-21 Sept. 1914), also constructed a grand residence in Bedford, where "W. Gates & Son" had opened and operated the Bedford Roller Mills in 1890, following a significant modernization of the Chagrin Falls and Bedford mills. The Gates-Handyside House, finished ca. 1894 and the first house constructed in Bedford that was wired for electricity, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Facade Monograph No. 7, Cleveland Restoration Society (1991).
