Thomas Griffin, Jr., was in the War of the American Revolution, stationed at Fort Griswold, Groton, Conn., when it was captured by theBritish in Sept 1781; but in some way he marvellously escaped when nearlythe whole garrison was massacred. He married after the war, and in theyear 1800 moved with his family to Brookfield, Madison Co., New York.
The colony that emigrated at that time consisted of twelve or morefamilies. Simeon Brown, Jr.'s family preceded this colony to the sametown by eight years. The common phrase then was, "Going out West", whichwas to the wilderness"of the great State of New York. When No.Stonington, Conn., was set off from Stonington, in 1897, there were inthe north town 2,700 inhabitants; now (1905) 1,200.
Thomas Griffin, Jr., and his wife attended the Second Baptist Churchin No. Stonington, Elder Simeon Brown, pastor, and after the year 1800,the Baptist Church in Brookfield, Elder Simeon Brown, Jr., pastor.
