Our GRISWOLD Family line descends from EDWARD G RISWOLD born 1607 in
Warwickshire, England. Hedied on August 30, 1691 in Ki llingworth,
Middlesex County, Connecticut. Edward was the first of our Grisw old family to emigrate to America in 1639. Bessie May Griswold is my grandmoth er.

"JUDES-GRISWOLD, T he following is from an Amsterdam newspaper: Ateight
o'clock Tuesday evenin g, June 10, took place the marriage of Charles
Judes, Jr. of Amsterdam and Mi ss Mabel Griswold, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Sylvester Griswold of Penn Yan, a t the parsonage of Trinity German
Lutheran church on Spring Street, the Rev. George W. Frasch officiating.
They were unattended. The bride is numbered a mong Amsterdam's estimable
young ladies. Immediately following the ceremony, a wedding dinner was
enjoyed at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Jarvis Putman, of No 34
Milton Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Judeshave gone to Penn Yan for a short
stay, before taking up their residence in this city".

OSCARGRISWOLD - Oscar Griswold, 85, a native of Penn Yan, died at his
home in Binghamton at 277 Robinson Street on Saturday, December 10,
1960. He was the son of Thomas Sylvester and Anna Spink Griswo ld. Mr.
Griswold who worked at the old Guile and Windnagle Basket Factory in Penn
Yan, moved to Binghamton about 30 years ago, where he was employed in t he
Endicott-Johnson Shoe Factory. Heis survived by four children, Howard
of Binghamton, Oscar of Spring Arbor, Mich., Albert of Boston and Mrs.
Margar et Carlson of Jamestown; four sisters, Mrs. Charles Jeudes of
Amsterdam, Mrs. Jean Hall of Ithaca, Mrs. Fred Perkins ofSchenectady and
Mrs. Jarvis Putnam of Penn Yan. Funeral services were held in Binghamton
Tuesday morning, with burial in Lake View Cemetery, Penn Yan, onTuesday
afternoon".

My great-grandfather's given name at birth was Sylvester Griswold. Between 1850 and 1855 , his name was changed to "THOM AS" Sylvester Griswold. I think this was done because there was another male c hild born in Yates County, New York, also with the name Sylvester Griswold. Aa ron H. Griswold, Sylvester's father, must have realized this and decided to cha nge his son's name to "Thomas" Sylvester Griswold. Although I cannot find docu mentation of this, he wascalled "Thomas" for the rest of his life. I have fou nd Thomas in many federal and state census's, the only place I have found "Sylv ester" are in officialdocuments such as; the Civil War records, his obituary a nd his burial records.Many, many years ago, my grandmother, Bessie May
Gris wold-Putnam, told me that her father's name was "Thomas Sylvester
Griswold" a nd that he served in the Civil War. Once I figured out the
name change, it m ade my search for himmuch easier!
Sylvester "Thomas" Griswold married An na Rebecca Spink on October 8, 1866 in Yates County, New York. The ceremony was performed by William Comstock, Justice of the Peace. I believe that my grandm other Bessie said that her mother had fourteen children. I have found all fou rteen but I cannot tellwhat happened to four of them. Their children are: Fr edrick, David F., Frank, Willie, Ella, Oscar, Pearl, Lottie, Jennie, Frank, Nel lie, Harry, Bessie andMabel.

Was this baptism done as a sign of adoption by his stepfather, Nicholas.
With the birth of Levi in December, Isaac's half-brother, perhaps Lydia
developed health problems and to ensure a home for Isaac, he was adopted
by Nicholas. Lydia eventually died in August of that year. This is only
speculation, no proof, and it appears if the adoption did take place that
Isaac chose his original last name when he came of age.

19, 1898. It lists the names of his children and their birthdates,wife's
name and marriage date.

Leonard G. Dennis (one year). The 90 days' company numbered 3 officers
and 88 men and had no losses; the 100 days' company numbered 3 officers
and 98 men, of whom 3 died by accident or disease; the one-year company
numbered 3 officers and 99 men, and served without loss. The 2nd Co.
from Beverly, was mustered into service for 90 days, May 3 1864. It was
stationed at Gloucester until Aug. 6, when its term expired. It at once
reenlisted and was mustered in Aug. 7, for 100 days' service, being again
stationed at Gloucester.
