13701 Birth, Relationship and Marriage information: Sp- Susannah Hamilton, m. 6Mar 1788 in
Chester, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts; from HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE FAMILIES OF
CHESTERFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.

Death: from PIONEER WOMEN OF THE WESTERN RESERVE; reports Samuel drowned on a trip back to Mass. while fording Buffalo Creek. There is a BuffaloCreek in western PA about 20 miles NW of Pittsburgh. This creek flows into the Allegheny River and is probably the area of Samuel's death.

Ref. Shays' Rebellion: Possible reason to move to Ohio Terr.- Rebellion was centered in Hampshire Co, MA 1787-88. Shays was fr Pelham, MA & was probably known by the Hamiltons. Mass. was an uncomfortable area for yomen farmers in 1780s after the Rev. War. To seek relief, many emigrated to Ohio. They were probably not welcome in NY state as the governor there feared insurrection also. Ref."Shays' Rebellion" by David P. Szatmary, Largo Lib. #974.403 pub. by Univ of MASS. Press, Amherst, MA 1980.

SAMUEL C. HAMILTON, deceased, was a respected and representativecitizen of Rock County from 1843 until1865, covering a periodof twenty-two consecutive years. He was a native of NewYork, born on the 12th day of October, 1809, and his parents wereFreeborn and Tacy (GREEN) HAMILTON. He was reared to manhood inhis native State, and was married Sept. 27, 1832, in AlleghenyCounty, Miss Hannah BABCOCK becoming his wife. The lady was bornin Batavia, Genesee Co., N.Y., and is a daughter of Daniel andLois BABCOCK and a sister of Dr. BABCOCK, a prominent physicianof Rock County, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume. Her father was numbered among the early settlers of Johnstown, and his death occurred at Milton in 1867. The union of Mr. andMrs. HAMILTON was blessed with two children, a son and daughter:Walter G., the eldest, was born on the 4th day of June, 1833,and was a leading citizen of Milton, where he made his home formany years. He was the first postmaster under a Republicanadministration, having been appointed to that positionin 1860,and filled the office until 1874, when he resigned. He thenbecame a commission merchant, following that business until hisdeath, which occurred Feb.14, 1885. He was also a trustee ofMilton College at the time of his death. Emma, the youngerchild, who was born May 25, 1841, was educated at MiltonCollege, and makes her home with her mother.
In 1842, accompanied by his family, Mr. HAMILTON left New Yorkand the following year became a resident of Rock County, settling on a farm on section 1, Town of Harmony. The land wasthen in a wild andunimproved condition, the settlements werefew and far between , and wild gameof all kinds was still to befound in abundance. The nearest market was at Milwaukee, towhich city the journey was made with ox teams. Many were thetrials and hardships endured by the pioneer settlers, yet tothem is due the honor of laying the foundation upon which one ofthe leading counties in this great commonwealth has been reared. After engaging in the cultivation of his farm for severalyears,in the spring of 1856 Mr. HAMILTON abandoned agriculturalpursuits and removed with his family to Milton, where hecontinued to make his home until his death, which occurred July13, 1865. He was a member of the Seventh-day Baptist Church, towhich his wife also belongs, and from the time of its !
organizationwas a stalwart supporter of the Republican party.Mr. HAMILTON was well known throughout the county, where he hadmany warm friends and was highly respected.
