Samuel-5 Babcock, Jr., second son of Samuel-4 and Ann (Pendleton)Babcock (James-3, John-2, James-1), b. Westerly, RI, May 16, 1731; d.there Mar. 23, 1813; m. Westerly, Jan. 23, 1755, Mary Smith, dau. ofBenoni and Ruth (Pendleton) Smith, b. Westerly, Oct. 2, 1733, d.Westerly, May 1, 1822. Both were buried in the Masatoxet (Babcock)burying ground, Westerly, and have inscribed stones.
On Oct. 2, 1777, three boats, each contained seven men, were fittedout in Westerly to join Sullivan's expedition on the island of RhodeIsland. In passing Point Judith in the night, when the sea was veryrough, two of the boats were capsized, and of the fourteen men throwninto the sea eight were drowned. So far as known, their names wereWilliam Babcock, Nathan Babcock, Nathan Babcock, Joseph Hall, ZebulonPendleton, Isaac Pendleton, and Mr. Bigelow. The first two, William andNathan Babcock, were the eldest sons of Samuel, Jr., and Mary SmithBabcock. Their thrid son, Paul was among the number thrown into the seabut was rescued. The second Nathan drowned was son of Col. Nathan.Westerly and Its Witnesses, by Dennison, contains an interesting accountof the accident.

Upon the death of Benjamin Babcock (1857) the land was apportionedamong his children. The latter, consisting of 306 acres, was left to theother children who had remained at the home. So the homestead farm wasleft to John Bannister Gibson Babcock (1st), Valeria Ann Babcock, andAndrew Jackson Babcock. The Babcock family burying ground is the onlyportion of the original estate in which the title still remains in theBabcock family as a whole. The old estate and burying ground are locatedabout 10 miles south of Owego, New York, and about 1.5 miles north ofWindham, Pennsylvania.

STERLING - Walter "Bunny Bab" Babcock, 76, of 574 Sterling Road,husband of Lillian (Main) Babcock, died Friday morning at his home.
Mr. Babcock was born Aug. 11, 1914, in Sterling, son of the lateGeorge and Mary (Belknap) Babcock. He was a lifelong Sterling resident.
He worked for the state of Conn. Dept. of Enviromental Protection atthe Pachaug State Forest from 1945 to 1971.
Mr. Babcock was a member of the Oneco Volunteer Fire Company andchief for more than 12 years.
He was a selectman in the town of Sterling for more than 10 years.
Mr. Babcock was an avid baseball player and played for more than 10years with the Twilight League on teams in Oneco, Sterling and JewettCity.
He married the former Lillian Main on Dec. 22, in Gales Ferry.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Peter Babcockof Sterling and Paul Babcock of W. Hampton, Mass.; two daughters, SayraPoole of Harwinton and Nancy Babcock of Magnolia, Mass.; a brother ElmerBabcock of Oneco; four sisters, Mildred Barber of Wickford, RI, MaryAnderson of Brooklyn, Laura Griswold of Vernon and Hazel Grinswold ofEllington; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchilden.
The Tillinghast Funeral Home, 433 Main St., Danielson, is in chargeof arrangements.
