Virkus, 7, 850. Came to America in the Susan and Ellen which left
London 18 April 1635. Freeman in Cambridge 1636, constable and
juryman 1639, selectman 1640-1642.
G.H. Johnson 1913, One Branch of the Fay Family Tree; An Account of
the Ancestors and Descendants of William and Elisabeth Fay of
Westboro, Massachusetts, and Marietta, Ohio. Thomas emigrated in
1635, settling in Watertown, Massachusetts. He died leaving an
estate worth 449£ 4s 9p to his three sons and one daughter.

Decendants. In New England, he settled in that part of Watertown
that became Cambridge at a later date.
W.T. Brigham, History of the Brigham Family, LDS FHC microfilm
1033775, item #3. Thomas Brigham probably born in England 1603, died
Cambridge, Massachusetts, 8 December 1653 (the 8th day of the 10th
month, i.e. December in the old calendar, not October as recorded in
other references). Probably buried in the old Burial Ground on the
south side of Cambridge Common.
Probably married in 1637.
8 April 1635: Thomas Brigham, age 32, named on a passenger list
of those to be taken to New England on the Suzan and Ellen, under
command of Mr. Edward Payne, Master.
Place of residence unknown, but he owned 13 acres in Watertown, on
the boundary of Newtown (later Cambridge), a village rather closer to
his property. This is now partially occupied by Radcliffe College at
the intersection of Brattle Street and Ash Street. In due course
additional land grants were received. Other land transactions exist
for Thomas Brigham including 180 acres in Shaw Shine, an area set off
from Cambridge in 1655 and later incorporated as Billerica.
18 April 1637: Made Freeman by General Court of the Massachusetts
Bay Company.
1 October 1639: Became Constable and joined with the Selectmen of
the town. Reappointed 8 November 1642.
8 June 1646 and 4 November 1646: Thomas Brigham 7 shillings 6
pence and 4 shillings, respectively, for violation of laws regarding
maintenance of hogs and oxen. Also 11 October 1647 and 12 January
1651 again fined. (Most of villagers were involved in violations.)
Will dated 7 December 1653, proved 3 October 1654 at County Court
held in Cambridge. Heirs include his wife (Mercy Brigham), eldest
son Thomas and four other children: John, Mary, Hannah, and Samuell.
Among overseers of the will is named William Towne. Value of estate
449 pounds 4 shillings 9 pence. The failure to record a deed of sale
of Thomas's Watertown property lead to a lawsuit by four surviving
children in 1695 to reclaim ownership.
W.L. Rubbles, Brigham Ancestry, pp. 1, 3 and 6. Reverend Thomas
Shepherd, preacher at Buttercrambe, Yorkshire, guided a party of
Yorkshire men to emigrate. They embarked on the Susan and Ellen in
London, 18 April 1635. Married in Massachusetts, but no record has
been found.

ELBERT ADRAIN BRINCKERHOFF, manufacturer, born in Jamaica on Long Island, Nov. 29, 1838, is the son of John N. Brinckerhoff, principal of Union Hall Academy there from 1837 to 1865, and grandson of Robert Adrain, LL.D., a distinguished mathematician. His ancestry is traced back to the landing of the early Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam in 1638. Elbert graduated from the academy, of which his father was principal, and had turned his face toward college, when an opportunity offered for a voyage around the world in a sailing vessel. In January, 1855, he sailed from New York for San Francisco. The unexpected charter of the vessel in San Francisco for New York, instead of China, changed his plans. Accepting an offer from a commercial house in San Francisco, he entered upon his work and remained in that city from April, 1855, to August, 1860, when he returned home for a visit. Consideration of the long distance from his parents, determined him to secure a position in New York; and in November, 1861, he was employed as bookkeeper and cashier by the firm of Fox & Polhemus, then the leading commission merchants and manufacturers of cotton duck in the city. In 1865 he became a partner in the house, and a few years later, owing to deaths and retirement, the senior partner. Since 1870, the house has been known as Brinckerhoff, Turner & Co. After more than twenty-five years in the manufacturing and selling of cotton duck, he retired, in 1887 from an active interest, withdrawing entirely in 1890. In 1869 he married Emily A., daughter of the late Colonel Washington R. Vermilye. Their children are Emily Vermilye, now Mrs. Frederick S. Duncan; Mary E., now Mrs. James D. Armstrong; Elbert A. Brinckerhoff, jr., and four younger daughters. The family live in Englewood, N.J., but business interests call Mr. Brinckerhoff daily to the city. He is a member of the St. Nicholas and Holland Societies and the Down Town and Presbyterian clubs; vice-president of The American Bible Society and The Merchants' National Bank; treasurer of The Presbyterian Hospital; and trustee of The American Seamen's Friend Society.
...................................................................................................................................................................
Elbert Adrain Brinckerhoff was born at Jamaica, Long Island, the son of John N. Brinckerhoff, principal of the Union Hall Academy at Jamaica from 1836-1865. His grandfather was Robert Adrain, LL.D., a distinguished mathematician, at one time holding the mathematics chair at Columbia College. Having been graduated from his father's academy, he sailed for San Francisco in January, 1855, and Entered a commercial house there in April of that year. While there he joined the famous Vigilance Committee in 1856 at the age of eighteen. He was connected with Wells, Fargo & Company until November, 1861, when he became bookkeeper with the firm of Fox and Polhemus--having left San Francisco in 1860 and deciding to remain in the East. In 1865 he was made a partner of the firm and a few years later became the senior partner. In 1870 the firm name changed to Brinckerhoff, Turner & Company. Since 1877 he was a director, and since 1894 vice-president, of the Merchants' National Bank; and also a director of the Harriman National Bank, of Barrett, Nephews & Company and of other corporations. He was also closely associated with Vermilye & Company and later with Mackay & Company. For a long period he acted as treasurer of the Presbyterian Hospital of which he was governor from 1881. He became manager of the American Bible Society in 1877 and vice-president in 1894, in both of which positions he continued until his death. He also served as manager of the American Seaman's Friend Society and of other charitable and philanthropic institutions. He was a prominent member of The Holland Society of New York, to which he was elected on October 27, 1887; of the St. Nicholas Society; the Downtown Association and the Atlantic Yacht Club. From 1874 he was an elder, for many years senior elder, and since the same date also a trustee of the Presbyterian Church. In 1899-1902 he was Mayor of Englewood; at one time governor of the Englewood Hospital; a trustee of the Englewood Field Club and director in the Citizens' National Bank. In 1869 Mr. Brinckerhoff married Emily Augusta Vermilye, daughter of Col. Washington R. Vermilye, founder of the banking house of Vermilye & Company. After a short stay at Jamaica, Long Island, Mr. and Mrs. Brinckerhoff built and in 1873 moved into their present residence on Palisade Avenue in Englewood. Mrs. Brinckerhoff survives him, as well as all of his children: Emily Vermilye, now Mrs. Frederick S. Duncan; Mary E., now Mrs. James D. Armstrong of St. Paul, Minn.; Elbert A. Brinckerhoff, Jr.; Elizabeth L., now Mrs. William B. Chapin; Margaret, now Mrs. H. Le Roy Pitkin; Helen M., now Mrs. Frank B. Probst, and Janet, now Mrs. Clarence D. Kerr. Of these all but Mrs. Armstrong live in Englewood. The funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, March 26th, at Englewood Presbyterian Church by the pastor, Rev. Robert Davis. Interment was in Brookside Cemetery.
