[Spicer Family File.FTW]
The Probate Records of New London County, Connecticut; "Aug 10, 1714. Mary Spicer widow and relict of Peter Spicer late of New London deceased and administratrix of his Estate appeared at this Court and made an addition to the inventory of the said Estate of a lott of land in the plantation given the Volunteers and the other inventoried Estate having been already distributed this Court distributes the said lott as followeth viz: one third part thereof to the widow during her natural life, to the Eldest son a double portion thereof and to the other nine children & ye representatives of one that is deceased equal portions.
Receipt of Mary Spicer to her Son Edward Spicer;
"I Mary Spicer Widow to Peter Spicer formerly of New London, Deceased have had sixty six pounds six shillings in moveables out of the Estate of the s'd Peter Spicer which is in full of what the Court ordered for me and I do hereby acquit my son Edward Spicer his heirs of any further demand on acct of that Estate in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand the 9th day of Decmbr 1730.
Wit: her
Humphrey Avery
Mary M Spicer
John Spicer mark
The above receipt seems to indicate that Edward Spicer was not feeling in best of health and wished to make sure that no claims would be made on his heirs. It is probable he died in 1731. His [Page 241] mother Mary (Busecot) Spicer must have been quite aged at this date."
"Sept 13, 1715. Mary Spicer widow of Peter Spicer late of New London deceased having put the Estate into the hands of her eldest son Edward to pay his brothers and sisters as they come of age said Edward has this day presented in Court Receipts under the hands of his s'd brothers and sisters for their portion to full satisfaction the Court does thereupon order a quietus off to the s'd administrator."
Source;
A Supplement of The Descendants of Peter Spicer; Susan Meech 1923
The date of this receipt and that of a similar receipt Jabez wrote to Edward do not coincide. Mary dated her receipt December 1730, while her son Jabez's receipt is dated May 1715. A similar receipt to Edward regarding his share of Peter's estate is dated May 1715. Yet Peter is said to have died in 1694.
In an old book now kept in the county clerk's office at Norwich, Ct, is recorded the distribution of Peter Spicer's estate as follows: "At a Court of Probate held Sept. 18, 1694. The inventory of the estate of Peter Spicer deceased was exhibited in Court was proved accepted and ordered to be recorded and this Court grants power of administration to the widow and makes distribution as followeth for the widow thirty six pounds with her thirds of the moveables. To the eldest son Edward double portion 15 pounds 10 shilling and to the rest of the children being ten in number 7 pounds 15 shilling apiece and if any of the children die before they come of age to receive their portion then their part to be equally divided amonst the survivors;" Capt. Brewster & Thomas Rose were appointed overseers.
Note: Warwick, RI: "Peter Spicer of Mohegan or now Norridge in the Collony of Conticott and Mary Busecot of the town of Warwick in ye Collony of Rhode Island were married Dec 15, 1670" 2
Married: 15 DEC 1670 in Warwick, RI
Note:
The marriage of Peter Spicer and Mary, daughter of Peter and Mary (___) Busecot, is recorded in Warwick, R I as follows: "Peter Spicer of Mohegan or now Norridge in the Collony of Conticott and Mary Busecot of the town of Warwick in ye Collony of Rhode Island were married Dec 15, 1670." Eleven children were born to them, whose names are recorded in a Bible formerly owned by Abel Spicer. The birth dates were not given and can only be conjectured from the dates of marriages known. EZRA G. BUTEN, a farmer residing on section 8, in the town ofMilton, is numbered among the honored pioneers of Rock County.But few have longer been residents of the community, and nonehave been more prominently identified with the history of MiltonTownship. The 25th day of July, 1842, witnessed his arrival,and since that time he has been an active participant in therapid growth andprogress which have since been made. Mr. BUTENis a native of the old Bay State, having been born in BerkshireCounty on the 25th day of May, 1818, and is a son of Emmanueland Betsey (CROCKER) BUTEN, who were also born in Massachusetts.They were reared, married and died in their native State, themother having departed this life in 1832, the father in 1844, atthe age of sixty-three years. Untothem was born a large familyof children, only three of whom are now living - George W. andWilliam, who are engaged farming in Dane County, Wis., and Ezra,ofthis sketch. Those who are deceased are Horace, Almira,Frederick, Orrin, and Dorothy.
Our subject was reared to the occupation of farming, andreceived such educational advantages as were afforded by theschools of his native State atthat early day. He beganbusiness as a farm hand, working for various persons in hisnative State until 1842, when he emigrated to the West.Previous to that time, on the 3d day of September, 1841, he wasjoined in wedlock with Miss Lucy W.GREEN, their marriage beingcelebrated in Allegany County, N.Y. The lady was born inMadison County, of that State, and is a daughter of Alpheus M.and Abbie (WELLS) GREEN, who were natives of Rhode Island. In1844 her parents came to Rock County, and for some years residedin Milton, but subsequently removed to Albion, where they passedthe remainder of their days. Both were members of the SeventhDay Baptist Church.
In the spring of 1842, with his young bride, Mr. BUTEN came tothis county and made his first location in the town of Milton,purchasing a small farm on section 18. Life on the frontier wasthere begun, but afterfour years he sold out and bought anotherfarm in the same township, which he continued to make his homeuntil November, 1888, when he became the owner of hispresentfarm on section 8. As the days passed by, Mr. and Mrs. BUTENsaw their possessions increase, until they are now numberedamong the well-to-do citizens of the community. Their home wasblessed with the presence of nine children, whomade the pioneercabin echo with their shouts and merry laughter. They were allborn in this county, were here reared to maturity, and laterleft the parentalroof for homes of their own. Lucy, thefirstborn, is now the wife of Berry KEATH, of Milton, and tothem have been born three children - Eldredge, George and Lucy;Alpheus, the second child, is now deceased; DeForrest is acontractor and builder; Addis, who wedded Mary BOWERS, is arailroad employe, and resides in Milwaukee; Helen, widow of A.B. CLARK, resides in Chicago, Ill.; Adelbert is stillwith hisparents; and Arthur is now deceased. This family has beenidentified with the best interests of Rock County for the longperiod of forty-seven years, and in their hospitable homefriends and neighbors are always sure of a hearty welcome.
The upright lives of Mr. and Mrs. BUTEN have won for them theentire confidence and respect of the people of the community,and they are numbered among the valued citizens. Many changeshave taken place since their arrival in thecounty, and theyhave borne no inconsiderable part in the noble work of progressand advancement.
