"Alonzo Carter lived on the west side of the river, opposite the foot of Superior lane. He was a great hunter; with his hounds he would drive the deer onto the sand spit between the lake and the old river bed, where they would take to the water, when Carter’s unerring aim would convert them into venison."

"Major Lorenzo Carter and his son, Alonzo Carter, purchased lands on the west side soon after the survey, the son occupying the same and keeping tavern in the Red House, as it was called, opposite Superior lane."

DEATH: Drowned at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River.
From a statement made by Alonzo Carter in 1858:
"In 1806, the channel was three rods wide, and ten inches deep. My brother went in there to bathe, and got on the bar. I was across the river in the field topping corn. I saw his hands out of the water and ran there as fast as I could. He was never seen any more. The river has never been so far east as it was then. " | Henry CARTER, [child]

"There were several notable arrivals during this year. One of these was Lorenzo Carter—of whom we shall hear anon—who came from Rutland, Vermont, and had spent the previous winter in Canada. He erected a log cabin on the lowlands near the river, not far from Union (now Spring) street. He was a man of energy, and a daring and successful hunter, who soon made his presence felt in various ways, and left an impress upon the community. Near the same time came his brother-in-law, Ezekiel Hawley."
--A history of the city of Cleveland: Its settlement, rise and progress 1796-1896by James Harrison Kennedy, 1896, pg 56.
"A view of Cleveland as it appeared to the eyes of a stranger in 1797 is found in the statement of Gilman Bryant, already quoted. "My father, David Bryant, and myself," said he, "landed at Cleveland in June, 1797. There was but one family there at that time, viz.: Lorenzo Carter, who lived in a lot cabin, under the high sand bank near the Cuyahoga River, and about thirty rods below the bend of the river, at the west end of Superior street. "

Cause of Death: cancer
Grama Herndon was a wonderful inspiration to me.I remember her with the utmost respect! She had many, many friends and was askind, patient and caring as any human individual could ever be! When I firstmet her, she was PTA president of her sons grade school, Wilkes grade school. She worked as a cook in the school kitchen. Then she cooked at "Bakers Beanery" in Fairview. She was very well liked by everybody there. Then she went towork at Sears, Roebuck and Co. in the credit department. She then rented her house and got an apartment right across the street from Sears. She lived thereuntil her death.
Wherever she went, she had many friends. She was truly agood woman. She loved her family, every one of them. She was a super positiveperson. My mother, Geneva Shepard called her "Giggles" because she laughed ateverything. I think she did that as a nervous reaction but many times is reversed the anger in a situation.
I miss you, Grama Herndon, you were a wonderful mother-in-law and friend. And, an even better grama. I wish I could be like you.
In 1937, Grama Herndon was living in Freewater, OR and working forthe Stadlman Fruit co. She was 21 years old and applied for her Social Security card. (#543-01-6614) She had 2 boys by then but worked packing fruit to makemoney enough to make ends meet. This was 'depression' times and people had todo whatever they could to make sure the family ate.

Isaac Case came from Simsbury, Connecticut to Worthington, in 1804 with his family, consisting of wife and fivechildren. Two more were born after settlement. He bought a farm of ninety-fiveacres, west of the river, but lived in the town, where he built a cabin, goingfrom thence to his farm while engaged in clearing the land. He remained in thevillage a year or two, and then erected a cabin on this land, with no chimney, but simple a hile in the roof, through which the smoke could escape. They soonhad a puncheon floor and chimney. His children were: Orlando, who married anddied on the farm; Melona, who died with consumption; Pyrene, who was twice married and died in Kentucky -- her first husband was a tanner and currier, and hadcharge of that department in the Worthington factory; Philo, who died in Indiana, leaving a small family of children; Isaac Newton, who married Emily Vining,by who he had two children -- she died, and he married Mrs. Julia Case, by whohe has one child -- and Hane, who married and died in Union county. | Isaac CASE
