Jeremiah Gates, originally from Connecticut but later a resident of Delhi, New York, was an early settler. In 1816 he walked all the way to Brooklynand examined the prospects here. Satisfied with the outlook, he walked back to Delhi and got married. The lure of the woods in the West and the girl in the East must have been compelling, for he made the roundtrip journey in six weeks.
