      The title of Captain is given him in thetown and church records of E
      ast Haddam, and also in the records of the secretary of state. Joh
      n Chapman was a man of considerable note in the town of Saybrook an
      d East Haddam from the fact that he represented the former town in th
      e General Court at fourteen sessions and the latter at eight sessions
      . Atthe session of the General Court which convened May 10, 1694, t
      he following act was passed: " This Court grants liberty to Captai
      n John Chapman to set upa ferry over the Great River in Haddam for t
      he future;" hence the name Chapman's Ferry. The probate records of H
      artford and town records of East Haddamand of Herbron show that he o
      wned large tracts of land in each town. Mr. Chapman died, it is supp
      osed in the spring of 1712. Mrs. Chapman, the second, died October 30
      , 1694.

      t. John CHAPMAN, late of Haddam, decd.: Know all men by these present
      s: That we, Joseph CHAPMAN of Saybrook in the County of New London, a
      nd David CHAPMAN of Haddam inthe County of Hartford, and Samuel CHAP
      MAN of the aforesd. Haddam, the onlynatural sons now surviving of Ca
      pt. John CHAPMAN, late of Haddam, decd., andStephen CHALKER of Saybr
      ook, and Joseph SELDEN of Lyme in the County of sd. New London, and L
      emuel RICHARDSON of Stoningtown in the County of New London,sons-in-
      law of the the abovesd. Capt. John CHAPMAN, decd. (by affinity with h
      is three daughters, Elizabeth, Anne and Mehetabell CHAPMAN), and Lydi
      a CHAPMAN of Haddam, do hereby declare that for ourselves, our heir
      s and successors, mutually and firmly agree to the dist. of or dividi
      ng the whole sd. inheritance. Moreover, it is hereby agreed upon tha
      t Jabez CHAPMAN, with the approbation of the Honoured Court of Probat
      e, is chosen to administer on sd. estateand to pay all the just an
      d lawful debts due from the sd. estate out of his own part of the est
      ate, the rest of the heirs to be freed from all entanglements whatsoe
      ver.

      n of Capt. John CHAPMAN, late of Haddam, decd., for a division of th
      e estate, ws now exhibited in Court by Joseph CHAPMAN, Jabez and Samu
      el CHAPMAN, sons of the deceased, and Stephen CHALKER and Lemuel RICH
      ARDSON, sons-in-law. These appeared inCourt and acknowledged this t
      o be their free act and deed.
