      [Andrea Towner Plano]

      Founder of Towner Settlement, Roscomon County, 9 miles east
      of what is now West Branch, Michigan. Migrated from
      Deerfield, Michigan in a covered wagon. Was a farmer until
      1930 when a leg infection necessitated a leg amputation
      which forced him to retire. The couple had 11 children,
      seven of whom were dead when Jay died. He was a Civil War
      vet.

      FORMER RESIDENT DEAD
      Jay Towner, Civil War Veteran, Passes Away in West Branch at Age of 87
      Word has been received here of the death of Jay Towner, a formerresident of the vicinity, which occurred at his mone in West Branch onJan. 7th. Mr. Towner was 87 years old, and was the last remaining CivilWar veteran in Ogemaw Co. He is survived by his wife, the former RhodaYoungs, four children and several grandchildren. Chas. Mills, of thisplace, is a half brother. The funeral was held in West Branch on Jan.9,and burial was made in that place. Buell Clark and family, a grandson ofMr. Towner, from Palmyra, attended the funeral.

      1/19/03-From Message board, found Debbie who is also a gggrandaughter ofJay and Rhoda. She has death certificate for Jay giving birthdate andplace of birth. Jay married Rhoda Young in 1868. They had 11 children, 9of which I have names for. All of their children were born in MI. Jay andRhoda settled in West Branch, MI and both died in 1936. They are buriedin Brookside Cemetery, West Branch, Ogemaw Co., MI.

      Jay also served in the Civil War but I haven't been able to find him onany lists of Civil War soldiers.

      1880 Census: Living in Deerfield, MI age 32

      1894 Veteran's Census for Michigan: Summerfield, Monroe Co, MI


      1900 Census: Living in Denton Twp., Roscommon, MI with wife Rhoda andchildren Alta, Lafay, Lilley and William.

      1910 Census: Jay (age 61) and Rhoda Towner (age 56) living in WestBranch, Ogamaw Co., MI. also living with them is son Irving, age 11.

      1920 Census: Jay (age 71) and Rhoda Towner (age 66) living in WestBranch, Ogamaw Co., MI. also living with them is Susan (Ackley) Young,mother-in-law age 85. Also listed is son Irving, age 21.

      1930 Census: Jay (age 81) and Rhoda Towner (age 76) living in WestBranch, Ogamaw Co., MI. also living with them is daughter Virginia age7.
