Ruetenik was a former Erie County Commissioner and served a term as president of the Vermilion School Board. Away from those duties, he had a green thumb. Mr. Ruetenik owned and operated the Ruetenik Gardens in Vermilion for many years before retiring in 1981. He also served as the president of the Ohio Vegetable Growers Association from 1957 to 1959 and the National Vegetable Growers Association of America. Mr. Ruetenik, 89, died Tuesday in the Vermilion Manor Nursing Home, after a long illness. He was born in Brooklyn Heights. He moved to Vermilion in 1934. Mr. Ruetenik attended Ohio State University and majored in agriculture. He was a member of the Vermilion Evangelical and Reformed Church, Ely Masonic Lodge 424 Free and Accepted Masons of Vermilion, and the Vermilion Rotary Club. Mr. Ruetenik was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a former member of the board of Riverside Cemetery Association in Cleveland. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Ruth; daughters, Marilyn Welborn of Toledo and Donna Shepherd of Vermilion; a son, Roger of Montgomery, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
