EZRA CRANDALL, a prominent resident of Milton, Wis., is a nativeof the Empire State, having been born in Madison County on the8th day of June, 1820. His parents were Samuel and Anna(CRANDALL) CRANDALL, and their family numbered ten children,eight of whom are yet living. Samuel, the eldest, is a residentof Friendship, N.Y.; Ezra, of this sketch, is the second inorder of birth; Anna, who became the wife of R.T. SMITH, died in1855, leaving three children; Johnmakes his home in Friendship;Almira married a Mr. GARDNER, and four children have been bornunto them; Rocena is the wife of Elisha HYDE, a resident ofAllegany County, N.Y.; William D., who married Calfernia COON,resides in Friendship, N.Y., and has two children, one of whomis a teacher; Charles, a stock dealer andcommission merchant,resides in Friendship; the youngest son died in 1856; andLaura,the youngest daughter, is the wife of T.D. MILLS, and lives atBuffalo, N.Y., with her daughter, Mrs. TIFT.
The subject of this sketch received a liberal education,pursuing a course in Alfred University of New York. Soon aftercompleting his studies (in 1844), he was united in marriage withMiss Mary SMITH, their wedding being celebrated in 1844. Thelady was a daughter of D.F. SMITH, and died in February, 1888,her remains being interred in the Milton Cemetery. Their unionwas blessed with four children, two of whom are living: L.Estelle, whowas born in 1846, died in New York in 1868; H. VINEis now the wife of W. Wallace CLARKE, a book and stationerydealer of Milton; C.E. who married Miss Anna WHITFORD, is agraduate of Milton College as valedictorian of his class, andalso graduated from the Theological School of Morgan Park. Hiswife, who graduated from Milton College, had the same honor. Heis now taking a course in Yale College and is also teaching theHebrew language by correspondence and has a class intheUniversity. The youngest child of the family died infancy.
Mr. CRANDALLwas again married on the 27th day of March, 1889,to Mrs. E.P. BABCOCK, a nativeof Hartsville, Steuben Co., N.Y.,and a daughter of Perry and Sarah (PALMITER)POTTER, the formera native of Rhode Island and the latter of Connecticut, bothdescendants of old English families who emigrated to thiscountry in an early day. Her grandmother was a relative ofCommodore Perry. Mrs. CRANDALL was graduated from the AlfredAcademy, in the class of 1852, and four years later came West,and taught in the Albion Academy until 1861, when she became thewife of the Rev. Thomas E. BABCOCK, who was for eight yearspastor of the Seventh Day BaptistChurch of Albion. His deathoccurred in January, 1879. By that marriage Mrs. CRANDALL has ason, Pearl BABCOCK, who is a resident of Milton Junction.
Mr. Crandall began his business career as a shoemaker, whichoccupation he followed inhis native state for twenty-fiveyears. On coming to Rock County, in 1869, he purchased land andbegan dealing in real estate. He is now living a retired life.He has, however, been prominently identified with the leadingbusiness interestof the community, is a stockholder and hasserved as President of the Milton Bank for the past four years.He built his present home in Milton, which is one ofthe mostelegant residences in the town, in 1882. For many years he hasbeen amember of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, was Treasurerwhen the new house of worship was erected, and has ever been anearnest worker for the interests of thatdenomination. He is awarm friend to the cause of education, and serves as Trustee ofMilton College. Public spirited and progressive, he takes adeep interest in any enterprise for the public welfare, is a manof sterling worth and strict integrity and is held in thehighest regard by a
