John S. Plocica was a firefighter with the Cleveland Fire Department for 38 years before retiring as a captain assigned to the W. 25th St. and Clark Ave. fire station. For more than 45 years, he was involved with the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Cleveland. He was a charter member of the church and was named the parish's Holy Name Society Man of the Year in 1992.

Mr. Plocica, 84, of Parma, died Monday at Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights. The Cleveland native graduated from West Technical High School in 1932. He lived in Seven Hills for two years before moving to Parma in 1995. Mr. Plocica served on the board of directors of the Merrick House and the board of Jennings Hall in Garfield Heights. His first wife, Marian, died in 1985.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; daughters, Carolyn Hitsman and Jane Gonet, both of Parma, and Donna Jarmush of Austin, Texas; and eight grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Leo the Great Church, 4940 Broadview Rd., Cleveland 44109. Donations may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society in care of the church. Yurch Funeral Home of Parma is handling arrangements.
