- The Genealogy of the Brainerd-Brainard Family in America 1649-1908, by Lucy Abigail Brainard;p. 52-53; He was one of a committee for the building of a new church in Haddam. He was appointed Lieutenant of the 3d Co., 7th Regt., in 1772, and Captain in March 1775, continuing till Dec. 18,1776, when he asked to be dismissed from service. He had served in the militia more than 30 years. He was Captain of the company which defended the Bridge, when Washington retreated from New York to White Plains, and then, afterwards, cut down the Bridge. He was elected deacon of the Congregational church in 1784, continuing in the office till his death. He was a farmer.
