Notes |
- Died after a fall while going to babysit for another family. Daughter, Anna, was taken care of by maternal aunt and uncle in Klaipeda, Lithuania. Anna later came to U.S. at approximately age of 10.
**Note added 19 APR 2002: Anna Batulewich told me that this story isn't true -- that Karolinka died in childbirth. Ona was an only child. If this is the case, then her date of death can be included as Jul 1897.**
Jus̆kevicius, if they were Polish, they'd be Juszkiewicz. It is from the name element "Jus-" and is a patronymic name from a father or descendant whose given name was Joszef. Joszef is the Polish form of Joseph. Joseph originated among a group of Semitic people inhabiting ancient Palestine and means, "the Lord added". It is a popular surname in Lithuania with 397 families living there in 1985.
The -ewicz/-owicz patronymic suffix, meaning literally "son of," cognate with the Russian
-ovitch. In the modern Lithuanian orthography, it appears as -evic^ius or
-avic^ius, hachek accent on the C.
