  BRIAN PENDLETON AND HIS DESCENDANTS, 1599-1910, Compiled by Everett HallPendleton, Privatley Printed MCMX, found in the DAR Library, Washington,DC. Page 79. 40. Sylvester-5 Pendleton (Col. Joseph-4, Joseph-3), was born atWesterly, RI, 5 Aug 1730. The Westerly records show that in 1757, he paidtaxes of .2s 4d. in that town, and that he was made freeman there, 1 May1760. He was evidently a privateersman in the French and Indian War, asthe records of the Court of Common Pleas of Washington County (thenKing's County), RI [Book F, p. 307], show that "Sylvester Pendleton ofWesterly, mariner, late master of said schooner, Thomas Hazard, John Rossand Henry Wall of Newport, to recover 5000 pounds, and judgment for 1800pounds and costs was given in his favor at the sitting of the Court heldin August 1763. What became of him subsequently we have not been able to learn. Hisname does not appear in either the Rhode Island Census of 1774 or the USCensus of 1790, and neither his will nor any administration upon hisestate is to be found. The will of his father, Col. Joseph-4 Pendleton, shows that byFreelove-5, daughter of Col. William-4 Pendleton, Sylvester-5 had a son,Sylvester-6, born about 1749. married Eunice Cobb. Sylvester-5 afterwards married at Westerly, RI, 16 Jan 1751, SarahChamplin, daughter of William (3rd) and Sarah (Thompson) Champlin. Shewas born 5 March 1725, (Westerly Records).
