    • Martha Adelaide Taylor was deaf and mute. She was raped by a neighboringmarried farmer (tradition says a Mr. Brown). She gave birth to Mary Annwhen she was 15 years old. Her fathers second wife raised Mary Ann andAdelaide went on to marry another mute she had met at the school for thedeaf.
