OLD HOMES IN STONINGTON CT, by Grace Denison Wheeler, page 220.
At his death (John Breed) it became the property of Mr. Henry Breed, who built the new house now standing, and removed the old one which hadstood here so many years.
Mrs. Emily Breed Cleveland describes it as surrounded by pink andwhite rose bushes and large clusters of lilacs, which gave forth in thespring such an odiferous perfume. At the back of the house stood the tallpear tree and the old pippin apple tree, long since fallen, which yeildedmuch delicious fruit. The long row of currant bushes by the wall near theold well, with its sweep and moss-covered bucket; the bed of sage in thegarden kept free from weeds and cut at intervals, to be dried for thefamily medicine chest, and in summer the long tables covered with sweetcorn, drying out of doors for winter's use, all remain in the memory ofthose who dwelt there long ago.
