- THE MAIN TREE II, Second Edition, by Nancy (Portor) Childress, 1995. page160.
Martha died of cancer. She was the great granddaughter of Enoch FitzHenry. The Enoch Fitz Henry story as written by Anna Page Cherry ofClumbus, Ohio. A copy of a manuscript written by Anna Page Cherry forFederal Judge Louis Fitz Henry. The above Enoch Fitz Henry is a greatgrandfather to Louis F. Main (Amy's father) The copy made in Dodge Cityon 13 Aug 1827. Louis is Rosemary Ward's great Uncle.
"Enoch Fitz Henry was worn 9 May 1752 at Armagh, County Armagh,Ireland. While he was with several other boys on his way to school he wastaken by an English press gang and carried on board an English merchantvessel which sailed to the West Indies. There they were attacked withyellow fever and nearly all died, but he and a few others survived. Theship sailed to other ports. We cannot find out how long he was on shipboard, but while on board he acted as ship's clerk but was in all otherrespects a prisoner. Arriving at New York, they were allowed to go ashorefor a walk when he ran away and commenced his life in this country. Hewas fourteen years old when stolen from Ireland and had obtained a fineeducation and no doubt his family were people of wealth and education forhim to receive such advantages at so early an age.
He married Abigail Hartt in Danby, Rutland Co., Vermont 10 Feb 1788by the Rev. Eastman. She was the daughter of Susanna (Sawtell) Hartt whowas of Scotch birth. She was a Tory giving our government some troubleduring the Rev. War. She lived to be 105 years old.
The only relative Enoch Fitz Henry ever saw or heard of after he wasstolen from Ireland, was a cousin named William Fortune, who was acolonel in the English Army and stationed in Canada.
Hearing of his cousin by some means, he wrote to him and afterwardsvisited him. Mrs. Anna Page Cherry has a letter written by him in 1801after his visit to his cousin. He, William Fortune, was in New York Citygetting ready to go to Charleston, South Carolina and writes that he hasengaged his passage and provided himself with every comfort of agentlemen of prosperity. He sends his letter to his namesake, WilliamFortune Fitz Henry (this would then be the above Martha A., Henry'sfather) who was then but a few months old. Enoch Fitz Henry was thenpostmaster of Willsborough, Essex Co., New York as can be seen by thedirctions on Co. Fortune's letter.
There is every evidence that Enoch Fitz Henry was a faine scholar. He taught school forty years and in every place he lived he filled someplace of trust that none but educated people of that time could fill.Besides being postmaster, he was justice of the peace of another town ofthe same county. In Dublin, Ohio he was township clerk and to this daythey show with pride his writing.
He died 10 Oct 1833 and is buried in Dublin, Franklin Co., Ohio. There is no stone to mark his grave." Signed by Anna Page Cherry,Columbus, Ohio
