Herbert F. Bennett enlisted from Providence, Sept. 30, 1861, toserve three years, and was mustered into the United States service on thesame day and place, as a Private of Captain George E. Randolph's BatteryE. 1st Regt. R. I. Vol. Light Artillery, Col. Charles H. Tompkinscommanding. Battery E. was enlisted in Providence, and had its firstencampment at Camp Green. During his connection with the battery wasengaged in the following battles; Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fairroaks,Charles City, Cross Roads, Malvern Hill, Second Battle of Bull Run,Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Glendale, Willderness, andan number of minor engagements and skirmishes. Re-enlisted at BrandyStation, Virginia, Feb. 3, 1863; was mustered into the United Statesservice, Feb. 8, 1864, as 2nd Lieutenant, assigned to Co. L, 14th Regt.R. I. Heavy Artillery, and stationed at Fort Banks, La. Discharged atProvidence, Oct. 2, 1864, by reason of close of war; was Commander ofBabbitt Post No. 15, G.A.R., from 1887 to 1890; held the positions ofJunior and Senior Vice-Commander of the Department of R. I. G. A. R. Dec.2, 1903, was elected a member of the Commandery of the State of Mass.Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
Mr. Bennett was elected Representative to the General Assembly fromthe town of Bristol, RI, in 1881 and 1882. Apr. 8, 1882, was elected TownClerk, and by subsequent re-elections have served the town in thatcapacity to the present time, 1906.
