- William served seven years as a regular in the Revolutionary War, beingengaged in many of the fiercest battles. After serving with the VermontRegulars, William moved back to Rhode Island where he enlisted for dutyfrom Scituate Twp. He served the remainder of the war with the RhodeIsland Regiment. When DWilliam finished his service, he returned toProvidence, Scituate Twp.
In 1784 William married Amy Laws in Providence, possibly eloping. Shewas from Scituate. In 1786 after the birth of their first child, James,they moved to St. Albans, Vt where theyb lived for three or four years.There they were burned out and barely escaped with their lives. Theythen to Clarendon, VT where they lived for a time, later moving to Keene,Essex Co. NY.
William was left handed and very stout. Nobody could whip him.
