    • James Gates came to Nova Scotia as a Loyalist with his father.
      1692-4: James Gates name appears on the rate payers list for Wilmont. for 1792 and 1794.
      1827: The Nova Scotia Census listed him as a farmer and a Baptist living in Wilmot Township. His family included 6 males and 6 females.
      1838: The Census for the Township of Wilmot he was listed as a farmer living with Rachel. (Malvern Square was settled in 1790 and was called Mill Town before that.)
      1872: At a public meeting the name was changed to Malvern Square (four roads meet here) at the suggestion of William Gates. James received the first Grant of land in what is now Malvern Square. The grant extended from the Annapolis River to the crest of North Mountain and from the Kings County line to Dodge Road. He also built the old mill on the Wiswell Brook at Malvern Square.
