  • Notes
    • Came over with Rev. Thomas Hooker to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Moved to Hartford and then Hadley. Sailed on the "Lion" 6/22/1632 and arrived in Boston 9/16/1632. His original homelot and cow yard in Cambridge is now occupied by "Gore Hall" the Harvard library. Was a Freeman 3/4/1633, selectman 1635. Moved with Hooker to Hartford 6/1636. Was an original proprietor. His house was in the shadow of the original Hartford "charter oak". Was selectman for Hartford in 1642, 1646, 1651, 1656. After the death of Rev. Hooker in 1647, dissension began in the church between Reverend Stone, the new minister and the members of the church. Thiscontinued until April of 1659 when sixty settlers of Hartford,Wethersfield and Windsor signed an agreement to move up the Connecticut River into western Massachusetts and establish the town of Hadley. Elder John's name was fifth on this agreement and he was named to the committeeto "lay out lands and highways" and to do other town business. WhenHadley was organized, he was chosen as Selectman in 1662, 1663 and 1665.In 1664 and 1669, he served as Deputy to the General Court of Massachusetts, sitting in Boston. He served as Elder in the Church in Hadley until 1670 when dissension in the First Church of Hartford hadagain divided the membership and a new church of South Hartford was established. John White moved back to Hartford and became a member of South Church under the ministry of Rev. John Whiting. John was chosen Elder of this church and is mentioned in the church records as arbitrator and councilor in church matters.
