Notes |
The first of the Hewitt name in Stonington was the great grandfather of Israel, Thomas Hewitt, who was lost at sea in the year 1662. Allen Breed, the great great grandfather of Anna Breed, was the progenitor of the Breed family appearing first in Lynn, MA.
Israel and Tabitha lived in Stonington. Israel served as Captain in the local militia and was known as Captain Israel the rest of his life. His will was written 5 DEC 1783 and probated in 1784 (Stonington Probate Records, docket #1628 and Book 4, pp. 262-270). Israel provided for his wife Tabitha by leaving her all the moveable estate, the use of the land and buildings and 2 Negro servant women. Son Israel was to have the northern part of the homestead farm and son Dudley was to have the southern part. Son Darius was to have 5 acres and a dwelling house. Son Russell, 56 acres of land, and son Gurdon was to be put to a suitable trade and paid 10 pounds at age 25 years. The daughters Mary Williams, Cynthia Billings and Nancy Williams, were each given 6 shillings "with what I have already given them to be their full portion of the estate." Daughter Diadama Hewitt was to have Negro woman Doll, a new saddle, 2 feather beds and other suitable furniture plus 20 pounds at age 18 years or upon her marriage. An inventory taken 19 FEB 1784, gave a value of 1350 pounds on 465 acres of land and 236 pounds on the remainder of the estate for a total of 1581 pounds (Stonington Probate Records, Book 4, pp. 262-270).
