      One of the original proprietors of Litchfield. Never had any formal schooling (home schooled we would say in 1997). Deputy governor of CT 1741-1750. Major General, second in command at the capture of Louisberg from the French in 1745. Governor of CT 1751-1754. Author of Poetical Meditations, first book of verse published in CT. Writings: Poetical Meditations, being the improvement of some vacant
      hours (1725) with a preface by the Reverend Mr. Bulkley. New London [Conn.] : Printed and sold by T. Green, 1725. Description: lvi, ii, 78, [4] p. The Agency of the Honourable John Winthrop in the court of King Charles the second. Journal of the siege of Louisbourg in collections of the CT Hist. Soc. 1860.
