- BIOGRAPHY: HON. NATHANIEL FOOTE, A.B., M.A., LL.D., of Rochester, New York, elected an annual member 30 Nov. 1926, was born in Morrisville, New York, 15 Nov.1849, the son of Nathaniel and Olivia Minerva (Knox) Foote, and died in Rochester 26 Jan. 1944. He prepared for school at Cazenovia Seminary and entered Hamilton College with the class of 1870, attending through sophomore year then leaving to teach school, and not returning for lack of sufficient funds. However, in after years the college conferred upon Mr. Foote the degrees of A.B., M.A., and LL.D., and the University of Rochester and Hobart College also gave him theLL.D. degree. Mr. Foote studied law in the office of his father in Morrisvilleand was admitted to the bar a Binghampton, New York, in 1870, and practiced later in Morrisville and Rochester. In 1905 he was appointed by the governor a justice of the New York supreme court to fill a vacancy for one year, and the next year he was elected to a full term of 14 years as justice of the court. In January 1912 he was designated by the governor to sit in the appellate division of the supreme court and continued as associate justice of that court until theexpiration of his term of office in 1919, when in January 1920, he was appointed acting official referee.
Judge Foote married in Rochester, 10 Jan. 1872, Charlotte Ann Campbell, daughter of James C. and Jeanette (Armitage) Campbell. They had five children, Nathaniel Frederick, Franc Estelle, Mrs. John Colgate Jessup (Louise Knox Foote), Mrs. Jerome Babcock Chase (Charlotte Campbell Foote), and Olivia Jeanette. Judge Foote took great interest in genealogical matters, especially as related to his own family, and compiled and published in December1927 the Knox family genealogy.
