Nathaniel Foote was one of the first settlers of Wethersfield, C onnecticut.
He was born about 1593 in Colchester, Essex, England, and was ap prenticed to Samuel Croyle, grocer of Colchester, for a period o f 8 years on Sept. 21, 1608. ÒNathaniel Foote aged 16 years, so n of Robert Foot of Shalford in Com. Essex yeoman doth put himse lf apprentice to Samuel Croylye of Colchester, aforesaid groce r and Free Burgess from the Feast of St. Michael the ARchangel l ast past for the term of eight years. Dated 21 Sept. V Jame s I [1608]. Sealed and delivered in the presence of me Robert F oot and of me George Lumpkin.Ó
He immigrated in 1630 to Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts an d took the oath of freeman on Sept. 3, 1634 in Watertown. [Mass . Bay Colony, Men who took the Oath Sept. 1634-1636; Freemen mad e at the General Court, September 3, 1634] Nathaniel was one o f the earliest settlers in 1636 in Wethersfield. He was one o f the first ten settlers, known as Òadventures,Ó as was his wif e ElizabethÕs brother John Deming. He was granted a home-lot o f 10 acres in the original layout of the town in 1640 in Wethers field. Over the years, he became the owner of more than 400 acr es of land. Nathaniel represented Wethersfield in the Connectic ut Assembly between 1641 and 1643. He served as representativ e to the General Court in 1641, 1643, and 1644. He was stil l a proprietor at Watertown, although he had been living at Weth ersfield for six years, in 1642.
He was held in respect and confidence by his fellow townsmen, a s his appointments indicate. In May 1637, when the little arm y under Capt. John Mason was being provisioned for the memorabl e Pequot campaign, it was Òordered that there shalbe 1 hogg pÕvi ded att Wythersfield for the design in hand, wch is conceived t o be Nathaniell FootesÓ - a compliment, certainly from the colon ial authorities to Mr. FooteÕs ability to raise good pork. He d ied before 20 Dec. 1644 in Wethersfield, and his estate was inve ntoried there on that date.
The family as a whole had a large share in the tragedies of tha t early day, for Philip Smith, husband of Rebecca Foote, was ann ounced to have been Òmurdered with an hideous witchcraft,Ó amon g the members of the early generations, Nathaniel Foote had a da ughter-in-law and two of her children taken captive by the India nds and another child killed; a daughter and three of her childr en killed, which her husband and two other children were made ca ptives, and two more of her children wounded, and Frances Foot e lost two husbands to the Indians as well as one son-in-law kil led and another, with four of his children, taken into captivity .
