  Hiram Pease was the younger brother of Peter, Oberlin Ohio's first settler, and was himself one of the earliest colonists, following the trail from Stockbridge to Ohio in about 1828. He married Lydia Remile on 3 May 1818. He was a farmer, wagon maker, and church deacon. He was also a punster. His Epitaph reads: "Under this sod and under these trees, Lies the body of Hiram A. Pease. He is not here, only his pod, He shelled out his soul, And went back to God."
