Convent at 3857 West 16th Home of the Sisters of St. Joseph who served at St. Barbara Church and School. When the new brick building was to be constructed, the old house was moved to one of the empty lots near the corner of Botany and West 14th St.

-- On the right is the bakery that was operated as early as 1936 by Stanley Mankowski and then for a short time in 1942 by Frank Samosky (brother of the Samosky who ran the bakery near Fleet Ave.) and later by Frank Staszewski from 1942 into the mid-1950's. He died in 1957.

Denison Ave. looking east Vantage point is the East Denison playground sidewalk that led into the open lot on the corner of W.15th and Denison. You are looking out across what used to be Kilroy's house, the bakery, and Gasior's. All gone now. The building just left of center is Slabe's Shoe Store with the Harvard-Denison Bridge just right of that.
Denison Hill
The way it USED to be before the Jennings Freeway was built. Note the old wooden stairs. It was fascinating to walk down because there must have been at least a dozen transition areas. Photo taken about 1965 by Jim Rozhon.
Denison Hill
This image is of a hill that is actually in Zanesville, Ohio and was taken in the 1880's by W.G. Starke. It appeared on the cover of the Oct/Dec 2006 issue of TIMELINE magazine. I've included it here because is resembles Denison Hill to such an extent that I couldn't believe it wasn't taken in Cleveland. This must have been what our hill looked like in the early days.
Harvard-Denison Bridge
The stairs down to Jennings Ave. Not a great picture but it does capture the old stairway that allowed factory workers to easily access their jobs. This was also where someone decided to commit suicide and went SPLAT! down below. Looking east.

Glue Factory
This little gem was just discovered while looking at a factory shot. Located on lower Denison Ave. The side of the building says ANIMAL MEAT DEPT. This was either a glue, soap or fertilizer factory. Earlier incarnations of this location probaby housed one of the many tanneries that were found here. Many early workers from the Barbarowa neighborhood had this listed in the census as their occupation.
