1831 Letter
from Hannah (Stanton) Stanton

[Transcription of an 1831 letter sent to Joanna (Stanton) Fish (in
Brooklyn, Ohio) from her sister, Hannah (Stanton) Stanton of Groton,
Connecticut. We've tried to retain the original spelling, but there
was no punctuation, so that has been added to aid the modern reader.
Another convention of the time was to capitalize all words that
began a new line, but not necessarily words that began a new
sentence. The original images may be viewed in the DOCUMENTS
area.]

so fleshy in my life as I am now. I am troubled some with the
rumatism. I have not had a turn of my old complaint in my side
since last spring. now I will write soemthing about our moving on
there as for my own part I should be willing go on there to live for
I think we should be better off. Lododwick does not seem to have
any notion of it. he likes home to well to go to any part of the
country to live. our children are all weary for a start to go on
there if it was tomorrow. they talk a great deal about there Aunt
and Uncle and Cousins. when I read your letter to them they all say
do less go mother. my Dear Sister I thank you many times for your
very kind offers to assist and visit me. I should antisipate my
comfort in your company. Your good advice by letter and your good
tracts have I trust ben of use to me. I can not express my
gratitude in any better way than by adding may the choyests of
heavens blessing rest on youand yours. We live where we did when
you was down hear and are getting along pretty much e same asen. we
hav not bough us a home yet nor are we able to. I do not think we

every sabath. it is a low time as to religion hear but we have
reson to bless God that it is not so in every place. no we hear the
glad tidings of souls being converted to God by scores and by
hundreds. yes many thousand that have ben running the froad road to
destruction are now walking that narrow way that is cast up for the
ransomed of the Lord to walk in. we take the nusepaper Christian
Secreterry which gives an account of of a four days meeting whare
one hundred and fifty rose for prayers at once. surly it is an
uncomon time but it is a blesed time . yet it is to be feard that
many will have to take up the lemontation this summer. it is past
the harvest ended and my soul is not saved. I do not feel so much
ingaged as i wish as I desire to but I do not feel discouraged.
religion is preferable to every thing else. I do desire to live the
