  1. William MC MICHAEL b. ABT. 1779; d. 12 Mar 1852.

    Notes:
    Christopher: "My oldest Son"
William was an elder of the church as early as 1835. He also acted aschairman of a meeting of the congregation, commencing on May 2, 1840,which assembled to consider the building of a church. The meeting washeld at the house of Samuel Ekin, with William as chairman and J. W.Christy, as Secretary. The following resolutions were adopted:
1st. Resolved that we appoint three of a building committee, tosuperintend the building of a house of worship for said congregation.
2nd. That said committee procure ground from Mr. Ekin for congregationalpurposes.
3rd. That the said committee agree as to the size of the house, andproceed to raise the funds by subscription and (sale ?) the building ofsame.
4th. That said committee be John Smith, Samuel Loudon and Joseph W.Cristy.

    Signed. Wm. McMichael, Ch.
    J. W. Christy, Sec.
Among the subscribers to the church, appear the names of M. R. McMichael(3A14) for $6, and later, probably after 1852, the names of C. McMichaeland Jane Milford for $35, These last two, are probably Christopher (3A11)and his daughter Jane (4A31). On May 1, 1848, a certificate of goodstanding, from the prospect Congregation, was presented to the church ofWest Sunbury, by Christopher (3A11) and his wife Barbara. They wereaccepted. On November 27, 1851, Christopher was elected an elder. OnNovember 28, 1852, Miss Jane McMichael (4A31), later Mrs. Milford, wasadmitted to the privileges of the church. On October 18, 1856, JosephMcMichael (4A30) and his wife, together with her mother and sister, Mrs.Sarah and Miss Rebecca McKissick, were examined for admission to the WestSunbury Church. Mrs. McMichael and Mrs. McKissick were baptized, and allwere received into the church.

As the eldest son of the 1st Christopher, he would have been born about1779 or 1780, and died on March 12, 1852. (From another account, his dateof birth, Jan 1, 1780). He was stated to be a resident of CherryTownship, Butler, PA,,and this is substantiated by a record of landtransfer, dated for April 14, 1814, as follows: "know all men by thesepresents, that I William McMichael, do grant, bargain and sell untoJoseph Glenn, all my rights and title claim, or interest, a certain tractof land containing two hundred acres, be the same more or less, being thereminder of four hundred acres, viz. the north and/or side of the 400 ac.situated in Butler County, Slippery Rock Township, adjoining lands of Mr.Russell Andrew Christy and others, lying on the south side of the BigGlade, to **Glen with all appertainants thereunto, to him, his heirs andassignes forever, to have and to hold the same, & **McMichael is to give**Glen a sufficient deed for the same, at the expiration of 5 years. Inconsideration of which **Glen engages to pay **McMIchael and his heirs orassigns, Three Dollars Twenty-Five Cents pr Acre by him, his heirsassigns, or administrator as followeth: One hundred dollars in hand, within two years after (which he) is to provide and send on money for thedeed, which money is to be counted to **McMichael as part of the purchasemoney. Likewise **Glen pays Fifty Dollars on the above for two years, orif only Fifty Dollars in hand, One Hundred dollars at the expiration oftwo years from the date, and so on, One Hundred yearly until the whole ispaid, and for true performance thereof we do Bind ourselves in thepenelty of One Thousand dollars given under our hands and seals, theFourteenth April 1814."

    Signed: Wm. McMichael (seal)
    Joseph Glenn (seal)

The repetition of the two characters before the names of both principalsof this agreement would seem to indicate that they were some sort ofabbreviating for the "aboved named" or for the "aforesaid person". TheSlippery Rock Township are referred to, was later divided into townships, and the land in question lies partly in the present townships of Clay,Cherry, Washington and Concord. That portion of the land which held thehouse, was apparently in Cherry Township, since the Butler County historygives that as his home.

By both versions of the Butler Co. history, there were 9 children to thismarriage - but the family records indicate that a 10th, Matthew R., whoseinitials also appear on the records of the church

    In will "My oldest son."

    Notes:
There is some disagreement between two history books, and the family, asto his background. But he was born on the family farm near Euclid, PA,where his father, the 2nd Christopher lived and died. He was educated inlocal schools, then went to Grove City College and Jefferson MedicalCollege of the City of Philadelphia. One of the histories stated that hegraduated in 1881 - although naming the wrong college apparently. Hebegan his practice at West Sunbury, but after three to four years, removed to Farmington (now Eau Claire), where he remained for the balanceof his life. However, after the death of his first wife, he removed toNew Castle, PA, for two years or so. But they were very there andreturned to their old home at Eau Claire. He owned several properties inthat town, and a farm in Venango Township, Butler Co., which was occupiedfor a time by his son John and family. Dr. Michael is buried with hisfirst wife in the East Unity Church Cemetery, a few miles from town. After his death, his second wife went to live with a sister, and isburied with her. They were members of the United Presbyterian Church ofEau Claire.
Robert was married twice; for the first time on June 7, 1880, to MissMary Campbell, the daughter of James and Ann (Story) Campbell, by whomshe was the youngest of 9 children. Mry died on January 7, 1898, and Dr.McMichael was married for the 2nd time on April 9, 1902, to Miss Sara C.Allen. She died on February 21, 1925. There were 9 children by the firstmarriage, none by the second.

    Notes:
He was a tall man. Leta has a picture or two of him and his new bride

As per Leta, her dad had done various types of work to support thefamily. It must have been hard to support the 5 children. He worked longand hard for them. Leta said they were poor but didn't know it at thetime.
Her dad was a farmer, had his own crops. He dug coal from the familiesland and sold it locally. He took it out by hand. She said he had a timegetting the payment from some, their was one individual who would onlypay when it was time to buy more from her father. He owned at varioustimes 2 threshing machines. Her dad name the first one "John" and thesecond one "Jim." They were steam driven, like train engine powered.Actually they were called engines. He stopped using the first one, shedoesn't remember why, and drove it into an area of the farm and left itthere. Leta said it would probably be worth something now as anantique. She is correct again.
Thrashing was a big project, it would involve the male children andneighbors. Her dad probably sold his services with the Thrasher forcash. She didn't remember him bringing anything else home. He may nothave made much of a profit from this. Her brother Jo would usually help, his job was to keep the steam up.
He raised a few sheep for wool and lambs for extra money.
They had a few cows, and chickens for butter and eggs. Her mother wouldsell butter and eggs for her own little spending money.
