    At the session of the Legislature, in May, 1776, he was appointedMaj
    or of Militia, and at the session in the fall, Colonel. The followin
    g notice from the Green's Gazette of September 18, 1776, shows the re
    gard of theladies of East Haddam for their townsman, while absent o
    n military duty, andis a handsome tribute to their patriotism and ph
    ysicalenergy. "Several of the most respectable ladies of East Haddam
    , about thirty in number, met at Colonel Jabez Chapman's barn, and hu
    sked, in four or five hours, about two hundred and forty bushels of c
    orn. A noble example, so necessary in the bleeding country, while th
    eir fathers and brothers were fighting the battles of the nation."
