  1. Ebenezer FISH, Sr. b. 1757, Groton, New London, Connecticut; d. 4 Sep 1827, Brooklyn Village, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA.

    Notes:
In the fall of 1811, James FISH, his wife, two children, Mrs. STANTON, his wife's mother, and Moses FISH, his cousin, moved in an ox team to Ohio and stopped at Newburg. Brooklyn at this time was a wild forest full of the red man, the township had been surveyed and run into quarter sections by agents who lived in Connecticut. James and Moses FISH thought they would look at these lands. James selected a good piece and Moses selected a quarter section. James built a log cabin and his family moved into it, but becoming frightened by Indians, went back to Newburg. Other families coming, they moved again to Brooklyn. Moses wrote to his brother Ebenezer, in Connecticut, to come and take one-half his land, which he did. A road (now Denison avenue) was run from Newburg to Rockport, which divided the property of the FISHES. They built a log cabin, in which they lived till the war of 1812. Ebenezer enlisted for six months and came out with honors. Afterward Moses was drafted. His health being poor, Ebenezer took his place and served the remainder of the war. He went back to Connecticut, married Miss Johanna STANTON, a smart, worthy woman who, on hearing of his Ohio farm, proposed moving there. Accordingly in 1818, with their two children, Eliza and Emily (afterwards Mrs. CORBIN and Mrs. BOOTH), his two brothers, and their families came in a large wagon drawn by two yoke of oxen. They all built and lived in log cabins.

Two other children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ebenezer FISH, Johanna (now Mrs. FOWLS), and John Moses married Miss BRAINERD. They endured hardships and discomforts long before enjoying the ordinary pleasures of existence. Fever and ague also added to the trials of the first settlers. Ebenezer was ninety-three when he died.
----"Memorial To The Pioneer Women Of The Western Reserve"

Ebenezer and Moses Fish, who came with James from the East, settled upon 80 acres of land in Brooklyn, in 1812. Ebenezer located on the north side of what is now Denison Avenue and Moses on the south side. Neither was then married.

  3. Sally FOSTER, @ Descendancy chart to this point (2.Abigail2, 1.Ebenezer1) b. Abt 1807, Groton, New London, Connecticut; d. Aug 1867, Brooklyn, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA.

    Notes:
I originally had Sally's birth year estimated at 1813, but if her marriage date is correct, she would have been far too young to marry, especially to a man who was 45 at the time. It is more likely that she is one of the older children of Michael and Abigail and probably born prior to 1807.

MARRIAGE: She married Lathrop Pixley per LDS records in the IGI for 06 OCT 1825 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

MARRIAGE: FOSTER, SALLY and PILEY, LATHROP vol.0002 pg.0075 (Cuyahoga County Marriage Index)

    Notes:
According to the Brainard Genealogy by Lucille Brainerd, he lived in Concord near Painesville, Ohio but I show him as owning and living on a parcel of land on the south side of Denison Ave east of W14th St. He appears in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census in Brooklyn Township. I am reasonably certain that her enteries in the book for Concord are an error. All of his children would have been born in Brooklyn and not Concord as she states. She also says that Charles W. is adopted. I have no further information on him.

    Notes:
The FamilySearchâ„¢ International Genealogical Index v5.0 provides an estimated birth year of 1810 and place as Hinckley, Medina, Ohio. That location seems unlikely because her father is listed in the 1820 census in Groton, Connecticut. Another entry estimates her birth for 1814. I've chosen to use that one since her brother, Ebenezer was born in 1810.

    Source of this child: http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=homden&id=I135884

The 1860 Census has a couple, Albert and Charlotte, and their five children living in Wingville, Grant County, Wisconsin. Albert is a stone mason. Their ages seem appropriate and two of their children are shown as having been born in Ohio. None of the children are named Alonzo, though. He would have been 15 years old in 1860. Old enough to be out on his own? The five children are named: Elizabeth (age 14 - Ohio), Naeiah E. (age 9 - Ohio), Cecilia M. (age 5 - Wisc.), Oliver L. (age3 - Wisc.), Henry B. (age 5/12 - Wisc.). If this is, in fact, the right family, then it would appear that Albert and Charlotte moved from Ohio by 1854/55.

His wife died in 1865 in Montfort, Wisconsin which is just a short distance east of Wingville.

In the 1870 Census, Albert would already be dead, but there is an Alonzo, age 25 and born in Ohio, living in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. He is a stone mason. The next name is hard to make out. Might be Jennie, age 19. Another female, age 15 named Alia. Are these siblings rather than a husband and wife?

In the 1910 Census, Alonzo is living in Boulder, Colorado with wife Dora and two sons, Wesley and Wilber. Dora is shown as being the mother of 5, with 5 still living though only two are living with them.

    RESIDENCES:
1850 - Brooklyn, Cuyahoga, Ohio (probably on Newburgh St -- now Denison Ave.)
1860 - Wingville, Grant, Wisconsin (probably moved here about 1854)
1867 - Mt. Vernon, Black Hawk, Iowa (probably moved here in 1865, after his wife died, to be with his son)

They endured hardships and discomforts long before enjoying the ordinary pleasures of existence. Fever and ague also added to the trials of the first settlers. BIOGRAPHY:
From "Portrait and Biographical Album of Branch County, Mich." pg.510:
"Levi Fish was but eighteen months old when the sad event of his mother's death deprived him of her care. He was reared on his father's farm until he was seventeen years of age, at which time his father died, and he then went to learn the trade of carpenter and joiner, having four brothers working at the same trade. He was an active, capable, energetic youth, soon gained the mastery of his calling, and in a few years had laid up money enough to become independent, when he married, in April, 1847, Miss Elizabeth Sawtell. She was born in England, and came with her parents to the United States, and they having a large family of children to support, she was adopted by a family by the name of Sawtell, by whom she was raised as their own. Her original name was Mosey."

BIOGRAPHY: An article from the Coldwater, MI newspaper, dated February 28, 1908, that details the life of Levi Fish and Elizabeth Mosey. Per the article, Levi was born in Brooklyn Township, Cuyahoga County Ohio July 31, 1821, the fourth son of twelve children (no mention of parent's names or other sibling's names). He married Elizabeth Mosey, April 30, 1846 (no mention of location, but presumably in Cuyhoga County). Elizabeth was born February 13, 1827 in Yorkshire, England. They came to Branch County, MI on March 15, 1869, where they purchased the land that they still live on (in 1908). At the time of the article, they had lived on the farm near Marble Lake (section 32) for thirty nine years. Levi and Elizabeth had four children, one of whom died in infancy. Those living are Fred Fish of Coldwater, and Mrs. Maria A. Luse and Mrs. Ida Corless, both living near their parents in Quincy, MI. The article also states that five days after the fall of Fort Sumpter, Levi enlisted in the artillery branch of the service. He was at the battle of Carrick's Ford.

The 1860 census lists Levi as being 28 and his wife as 31, but if that were true, then he was only 15 when his first daughter was born. The census is most likely wrong.

In 1870, Levi was living with his daughter, Maria, and son-in-law, DeWitt Luce in Michigan.

    Lydia Hook - Obituary

Lydia Hook, wife of Stephen Hook (deceased) May 6th, 1885. Mrs. Hook was born in Connecticut Feb. 21st, 1821; married July 5, 1841; came to Wisconsin in the fall of 1842; has resided in the town of Oregon about 40 years. She had been a christian from childhood, and a member of the M. E. church over 50 years. She was a kind neighbor and retained the confidence of all who knew her. She evinced the fact that a christian life - a life measuring up to the profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ - is the sweetest and best on earth. Her last words to her children were, "meet me in Heaven." She suffered much during her illness but bore up with great fortitude. Seven children - four boys and three girls, - with many relatives, mourn their loss. The funeral took place from the Brooklyn church May 8th, conducted by the pastor, C. C. Swartz.

    Notes:
SOURCE_OF_NAME: At the time of the 1850 Census, there is no Julia listed with for Lathrop and Sally Foster ( though she may be living elsewhere), but by the time of the 1870 Census, she is shown living with Leonard Pixley and his wife, Alice. She is listed simply as Julia, so the assumption is made that she is a Pixley. She is about 6 years older than Leonard, so may have been born in 1829. If so, it means her mother may only have been 16-17 years old at the time she was born. An alternative theory is that she was the wife of one of Leonard's brothers who has passed on so she came to live with her in-laws.

    Notes:
BIOGRAPHY: Hanna A. FOSTER, daughter of Betsey HULET FOSTER, should not be omitted from this memorial, originated and sponsored by Cleveland women, with whom she has long been intimately associated, and by whom she is admired and loved. A valued member of the Ohio Woman’s Press Club, a poet of more than local reputation, gentle, refined, and unselfish to the degree of immolation, her life has been one of devotion to others. At the celebration of Cleveland’s Centennial birthday, she easily won the prize offered for the best written ode for the occasion. As non de plumes were signed to all the poems, the judges had no idea to whom they belonged until after a decision had been reached.
Miss FOSTER’s dainty verse and prose have not only graced the pages of print, but have contributed much to the pleasure of church anniversaries and college reunions in the town in which she resides.

    Notes:
BIOGRAPHY: FOSTER, LEONARD GURLEY (10 Sept. 1840-13 Dec. 1937) was a CIVIL WAR veteran whose avocation brought him the epithet, "the Buckeye poet." Born on the family homestead in the Cuyahoga Valley near Denison Ave., he was educated at HUMISTON INSTITUTE and Berea College. He was principal at Tremont School from 1860-64, after which he served with the 8th Ohio Battery on Johnson's Island. Foster also actively worked the family farm, which inspired many of his verses on nature. A veteran of the first Chautauqua meeting in 1874, he remained active in the movement as a speaker and contributor of poetry. He wrote an estimated 80,000 verses in his lifetime, including 47 volumes of poems in manuscript which he presented to the WESTERN RESERVE HISTORICAL SOCIETY His published volumes included Whisperings of Nature (1893) and The Early Days: A Pioneer Idyl (1911). Many of his poems were also published in the CLEVELAND NEWS and the CLEVELAND TIMES (1922) . He was the first clerk of the Brooklyn Village council and the second last survivor of the Brooklyn Post, G.A.R. Married to Lyde Holmden, Foster was survived by one of their 3 children. His brothers Edwin J. and Henry E. were Cleveland lawyers, the former having published verse and the latter a 1900 political campaign tract. His sister Hanna Alice Foster was a temperance worker and poet as well.

BIOGRAPHY: First village recorder for Brooklyn Village (Centre), Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

BIOGRAPHY: Note -- there seems to be some confusion about the siblings of these Foster poets. See notes for Edwin J. Foster (son of Nathan Foster) for further mention of this problem. Leonard, the son of Ebenezer who lived near Denison Ave., would have been born in the location as stated above, but to my knowledge, there were no siblings named Henry or Hanna, while Nathan Foster did have children with those names, but no Leonard. Very confusing.

    Notes:
The 1860 Census has a couple, Albert and Charlotte, and their five children living in Wingville, Grant County, Wisconsin. Albert is a stone mason. Their ages seem appropriate and two of their children are shown as having been born in Ohio. None of the children are named Alonzo, though. He would have been 15 years old in 1860. Old enough to be out on his own? The five children are named: Elizabeth (age 14), Naeiah E. (age 9), Cecilia M. (age 5), Oliver L. (age3), Henry B. (age 5/12).

OLD SOLDIERS WHO HAVE LIVED IN O'BRIEN COUNTY, IA
Compiled by Geo W. Schee and O.H. Montzheimer
    1909, Primghar, IA
Prepared for the Internet by Don Harrington

The Book, "Old Soldiers Who Have lived in O'Brien County, Iowa" was published in 1909. Mr Montzheimer did most of the work and Mr Schee furnished most of the funds for publication, printing and postage. It appears that the book was not sold, but a copy was furnished free to each veteran's family. The information on these approximately 500 veterans provide much information on their families in addition to providing their military records. I wish to thank Colleen Boose for making a copy of the book available to me so that it could be placed on the O'Brien website.

    Notes:
To make a record of the death of young Sam F. Hengstler, the night telegraph operator here, which occurred shortly after nine o'clock, while attending to the regular duties of his office on that night. There were frequent and heavy flashes of electricity coming into the office, and once or twice had set papers on fire, and which he had succeeded in putting out, by the aid of Mr. Albert Hook of Oregon, who was in the depot, waiting for the 9 o'clock train, to go north. He once asked Mr. Hengstler if he had broken a lamp chimney, and was told that it was lightning that had exploded in his office. Soon more papers were on fire and Mr. Hook rushed in to extinguish these which he did by throwing them upon the floor and stamping the fire out. Sam (as he was familiarly called) stooped down with his hand resting upon the table, to remove some papers that were yet on fire in the little cupboard under his table. He had scarcely commenced to do so when another bolt came and knocked him senseless upon the floor. Mr. Hook kept calling to him, asking if he was hurt &c., and when he had got the fire out, took hold of him to raise him up but was astonished to find him yet insensible, and carried him out into the sitting room, where other persons were in waiting. Finding that something must be done, sent up town and Doctor Evans responded without any delay. The Dr. applied restoratives but noticing that his pulse was gone pronounced him dead. He was taken to the Central House, where he was properly laid out and placed in a refrigerator.
The bolt struck him in the region of the heart, passed diagonally across his bowels, down his right leg and passed off at three or four places in his shoe. His friends--a widowed mother, brothers and sisters--live at North Freedom, and to whom telegrams were sent, as well as to a brother, an operator at Sleepy Eye, Minn. A reply from the latter was received in fifteen minutes, stating that someone would be there by the first train. The 9:25 a.m. express brought a brother and brother-in-law from North Freedom and returend with the remains by the afternoon train. By request of the brothers, prayer was offered before the corpse was removed, by Rev. F. M. Washburn, of the F. W. Baptist church.
That it was sad, does not adequately express the feelings of his young associates here; they had learned to love him for his mental and moral worth. He was a German by birth; was 19 years of age, and had been night operator here four months. Agent Potter did all he could to inform the young man's friends, and in procuring the necessary means for refrigerating the body; likewise the same from day operator Frank Rowley. Other Thanks are expressed elsewhere.
