Note: It is reported that Theo had such a violent temper and treated his family so badly when living in Michigan that during a trip his wife, Carolyn Emelia, in the dead of night called in some neighbors, loaded all the family belongings into wagons, put all the contents on a train and returned to Ohio never to see or speak of him a- gain. Following the departure of his family, Theodorus may have received his teaching credential at Oberlin College. On his return from a winter vacation in Florida, Theo had his pocket picked in Atlanta and was thrown off his train. He slept on a park bench, caught pneumonia and was taken, it is believed, to Wesley Hospital, where he died. His son, James Pemberton Randall was working for the railroad in Missouri and got a pass to go to Atlanta and claim the body. He was buried in Marietta National Cemetery (see Randall records) never to be spoken of again in the family circles. (Carolyn Randall Worrall, telephone conversation of December 3, l998)

    DEATH'S CALL
Answered by Ralph A. Randall, Auditor Elect of Medina County

The End Came Unexpectedly Tuesday Evening After an Illness That Baffled the Physicians. Had Been Long Ailing, Something of His Life and Work.

This community was shocked and deeply saddened Tuesday evening by the announcement of the death of Ralph A. Randall, auditor elect of Medina county and a member of the board of county examiners. The end came at about 7:30 that evening, after a singular illness that had baffled and perplexed the skill and knowledge of his physicians for months past. He had never enjoyed robust health, having been delicate from childhood. A catarrhal condition of the stomach, much aggravated during the past two years had made him an almost continuous sufferer. For relief from this trouble, he went to Cleveland Hospital last summer and for several weeks was under the care of Dr. John P. Sawyer. He received but little benefit, and after returning home his ill health was aggravated by symptoms of serious nerve trouble, that at times completely prostrated him. For some weeks past, he had suffered at times excruciating pain at the back of his head, and during one of these attacks of intense pain and nervous prostration on March 19, he was rendered unconscious for a number of hours. But he rallied, and placed himself under the care of Dr. W. D. Wise a local physician. He was able to go to Cleveland for examination and treatment three times during the past two weeks, and the Cleveland physician gave him the strongest hope of ultimate recovery, diagnosing his case as one of acute gastritis with sympathetic nervous affection.
But from time to time he suffered from attacks of the terrible pain in the head, and appeared to his friends to be losing ground. Last week, he seemed better, and was on the street last Saturday. Monday he showed symptoms of nervous collapse and a return of one of the attacks of terrible pain in the head, and during much of the night unconscious or in great pain. Tuesday the suffering and unconsciousness continued until about 4:00 O'clock in the afternoon, when he seemed to rally and grow materially better. His physician then left him hopeful of the outcome, but an hour later was hurriedly summoned again to find that respiration had ceased, and complete unconsciousness ensued. Artificial respiration and the most powerful heart stimulants were at once resorted to by the doctors, and good respiration and almost normal heart action restored.
For two hours and a half Drs. Wise and Freeman kept the fleeting spark of life glowing in the suffering body, but consciousness did not return and at 7:35 O'clock the fight for life had to be given over, and the brave spirit of Ralph H. Randall took its flight from earth.
Wednesday forenoon a postmortem examination was held conducted by Drs. Wise and Freeman, and attended by Drs. Jones and Damon. The cause of death was found to be a gathering of water at the base of the brain, causing fatal pressure on the vital nerve center there, immediate dissolution being due to the paralyzing effect on the breathing function of the brain center. The watery gathering was due to long standing inflammation of the covering membranes of the lower brain, caused perhaps by a sunstroke received six or seven years ago, and aggravated by over work and too long mental application. Nearly a cupful of water was found in the brain ventricles.
The funeral was held Thursday after-noon at 1:30 at the house and at 2:00 at the Congregational church, conducted by Rev. Jesse Hill. Few funerals ever held in Medina have been more largely attended, and the marked sorrow and grief of the large assemblage were a heart-felt tribute to the love and high esteem in which the deceased was every where held. Burial was made at Spring Grove cemetery. There are left to mourn him a wife, infant son, and two brothers, for all of whom the sincerest sympathy is expressed throughout this community.
The biography of the deceased must necessarily be brief, for his life was short. It is the story of a noble spirit struggling against adverse circumstances up to success and wide esteem. His recent canvas of his county for the office of auditor had made him known to most of its citizens, and the fact that he secured the Republican nomination for that highly-prized office, without a competitor in the field, tells how highly he was regarded by all men who met him and made even the slightest acquaintance with him. His brief biography was characteristically told by himself in the columns of the Gazette where, as a candidate for office, he addressed himself to the Republican voters of the county, and we shall here reprint those words of his own, for they glow with the modesty, honesty, courage and splendid manhood of the deceased. He said: "I was born in Lafayette township in 1878, and have since spent the greater part of my life in Medina county. For the past 12 years I have been engaged: in school teaching, seven of which I spent in Mallet Creek; the last two in Litchfield. In 1906 I was appointed county school examiner which position I now hold. I think I realize the importance and responsibility of the office to which I aspire, and shall, if nominated and elected, thoroughly devote my energies and ability to its successful administration, striving to perform faithfully and impartially, without fear or favor, any official duties involving friend or foe, rich or poor, corporation or individual, with justice for all and malice toward none."

Note: It is clear from the text, substantiated by competent 21st century medical specialists, Ralph A. Randall died of a form of spinal-meningitis. It is very strange the doctors, at that time, were not prepared to make an accurate diagnosis and to, possibly, save or prolong his life.

    14 November 1943

    Dear Nephew Ralph:
Your very interesting and most welcome letter reached me duly, and I was more than pleased to receive it, and to learn what the Global War had found for you to do.
Recently I came across an article in the encyclopedia of American Biography which reminded me of the request your mother made just after I came to California. A request to compile information concerning the earlier generations of Randalls, from the English Puritan immigrants, Boston 1640, on down.
I believe three Randall brothers came to the Boston settlement, Horatio, Marcellus, and John. As I understand it, we are the lineal descendants of Marcellus. And there is a book, written by your great-great uncle, David Austin Randall, a Baptist clergyman of Columbus, Ohio, who travelled
considerably in Europe and the Orient. This book, entitled, "The Wonderful Tent," published about 1880, has in its preface a biographical sketch of the author. All the ancient part of which, and I believe it traces family history back into the highlands of Scotland, where "the family name is not obscure" . . . all that part is as interesting to my generation and to yours as it was to the author, for we belong to the clan.
Your great grandfather Randall was the author's brother.
I do not have a copy of the book, and I know of no one who does, but, of course, if you ever have the time, in Washington, D.C. you can request a copy in the Congressional Library, and sit down therein to read the preface.
I mentioned the article in American Biography, which is a sketch of D. A. Randall's life. There is also an article about his son, my father's cousin, Emilius Oviatt Randall, an attorney and author of Columbus, 0hio. Your great grandfather, Pemberton Randall, (also a Baptist clergyman) was born in Connecticut, son of James and Joanna Pemberton Randall. His grandfather, John Randall, served throughout the American Revolution. His mother, Joanna, was a direct descendant of the Reverend Ebenezer
Pemberton, one of the early distinguished pastors of the Old South Meetinghouse, Boston. In the New Old South Church in Boston is a bronze tablet, honoring his memory. He was Old Sough's minister for seventeen years. We read the tablet when we once attended a morning service at the New Old South.
Joanna's father, Patrick Grant Pemberton, was also a soldier in the Continental Army.
Dorus has a great store of information about our forebears but I never seemed to have the time to study it very much. I am terribly proud of my family, past and present, and I love them, that's all I have ever had time for.
When you or your mother wrote suggesting that I make a brief historical sketch for you, I was barely able to do more than make myself a cup of tea.
I have rested a very great deal and am much better now, however. I have learned to recognize a great.
many new kinds of trees, flowers, and birds, have learned the touch method in typing, and am now learning Russian. It really made me happy to find I could learn it quite as fast as the others in the war language course.
My business, if you remember, was teaching foreign language, and on my desk is a row of Bibles in which I read a few verses every day, in all six languages. When I can read Russian, that will make seven. English, among them, of course.
I can also make a loaf of bread, and do so once a week. It is made with yeast. I have not bought a loaf of bread since February last.
Sorry my ribbon is so dim, and that I have run over on to the fourth sheet. Hard to make a handsome young nephew wade through so much, for you must have very little leisure, since there is a war on.
With all good wishes, and kindest love to you and yours, I am

    Ever affectionately yours,

    AUNT MARIE

1956, June 8: Anna Marie Randall died.
Anna Marie was DOA at the Elyria Memorial Hospital of unknown causes. She had lived in Elyria about 3 months prior to her death.

1956, June 11: She was cremated at the Sunset Memorial Park in North Olmstead, Ohio and her cremains were sent to Wainwright Funeral Home in Elyria who forwarded them to The York Cemetery in York Township (Medina) Ohio for internment.

Burial Note: I am very suspicious that, even though nothing was ever discussed in my presence, my father was responsible for the arrangements to have her body sent to Sunset Memorial Park and then to the Wainwright mortuary in Medina for internment at York Cemetery as: 1) my father was the only relative in the area at the time of her death and closest kin and 2) the Sunset Memorial Park was three miles north of our home on Columbia Road in Olmsted Falls. The similarity is too obvious to be ignored.
Unfortunately, whomever placed her in the York Cemetery failed to have her grave marked though it is believed it is on the Alexander family plot and, perhaps, someday, it will be marked.

    Notes:

I was born in Cleveland, my family moved to Akron where my father was a credit manager for Firestone Steel Products. Before the end of the war he accepted a position with Timmerman Products (the famous "Speed Nut" company) and we lived in Lakewood and Rocky River, Ohio. I attended Hiram College, in Hiram, Ohio one year and transferred to University of Cincinnati.

" . . . and what did you do in the "Police Action", daddy"?

I felt a keen need to serve in the Korean war and first applied for Flight Observer training and was tested in Chicago, Illinois. I failed the eye examination, so I enlisted in the United States Air Force from Cleveland, Ohio on November 12, 1952 and entered basic training at Sampson, AFB in Geneva, New York and was assigned to Squadron 3655, Flight 2138. I was permitted to apply for OCS and successfully passed the examination, but due to the shortage of billets, he was not enrolled. I then applied for and successfully passed the "by-pass examination" as a photographer being awarded a 23230 AFSC. Upon his completion of basic training, I was assigned as a member of the permanent party at Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Illinois assigned as a photo technician, Base Photo Lab.

On January 3, 1953, I was published on Special Orders to leave Chanute Field for assignment with the 12 Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Kimpo AFB, Korea. During this assignment, he received a promotion to Airman 2nd Class. The 12th Tactical Recon Squadron (Black Birds) was one of two night photo organizations in the USAF using a recon version of the WWII, B-26 as the platform. Serving night duty, time was left for extensive travel and photographing of the peninsula. One such adventure involved extensive photographing of the recently completed Bando Hotel in downtown Seoul. Photographs were later presented personally to the Korean Ambassador in Washington, DC and was followed by a letter from Sygmond Rhee, PhD, the president of South Korea. He served there until December 9, 1954 when he received Special Orders assigning him to the Base Photo Lab of the 54th Fighter Group (ADC), Greater Pittsburgh Airport in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. I was promoted to Airman 1st Class with a 23250 AFSC and was assigned, by the Squadron Commander, Major Julian Becker to be his NCOIC, Ground training and Information. I successful completed an OJT Training program at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi in September of 1955. I received several letters of accommodation from Wing and Squadron inspections. I applied for any early discharge on September 8, 1956 to reenter the University of Cincinnati to resume studies leading toward a degree in Business Administration.

On returning to the University of Cincinnati, I graduated in 1960 with a BBA degree in Marketing, During this time, I was inducted into Delta Sigma Epsilon (national business honorary), was a senior staff photographer on the university's yearbook (received a first place award for college yearbooks in the nation in 1959) and published a pictorial history "Cincinnati In Bronze" for the Cincinnati Public Schools.
Following graduation, he worked for Decision, Inc. a publisher of technical recruiting data, married Paulette Koller Johnen, widow of a close friend in Cincinnati who already had a son, Louis Eric. The small Randall family came to California in 1963 where he was elected a Vice President of the company with responsibility for for sales in the 11 western states.

In 1974, I followed his father's footsteps and started a technical recruiting firm in Pasadena, California until 1982. I accepted an appointment to the staff of International Prayer Assembly (IPA) in 1984 in Seoul, Korea as the Director of Development. On completion of the event, I fulfilled a life long desire and taught school as a full time substitute until 1999 when I again, retired.

Rick Johnen Randall graduated from U C Davis, is an high school agriculture teacher in the central valley, married to Catherine Sirolle and they have an adopted daughter, Hayley Elizabeth Randall. Robert Hale Randall is a graduate of CA State University at SLO, he is a registered structural engineer and and is engaged to be married next April. My wife is a credential teacher, and has been a nursery school teacher for 13 years in the community. We have continued to live a very quiet life with Polly continuing to teach and Dad, working, daily, on the Randall family genealogy. [William Roberts Randall, June, 2001]
